I'm not 100% sure how accurate this is, but I love the research and am waaaaaayyyyyyyy too lazy to do it on my own. Going by this, what I love is the thing that jumps out the most -- as the classes get younger, the percentage of redshirts begins to climb.I threw out the seniors/redshirt juniors since it was clearly a transition class and tough to judge. But if you look at the '10 class vs. the '11 class, the difference is pretty telling. The '10 class saw 12 of 18 recruits currently on the roster play as true frosh. Of the 12 that played, my arbitrary judgment is that only Spruill and Lyn were truly ready to contribute in any meaningful way to a solid BCS program. Everyone else probably could have benefited from a redshirt. Fast-forward to '11, last year's class's first year on campus, and just 9 of 23 freshmen played. Instead of 66.6%, that's less than 40%. And, of the nine who played, Crume forced his way onto the field and you're not likely to redshirt specialists (fisher and Rodgers). So that's really only six guys who played that probably could have benefited from an RS year. But if you figure you're rarely going to redshirt an entire class and some will have to contribute on specials and in backup roles each season, it would seem to suggest that we're finally building more legitimate depth. Are we there yet? No, but it certainly feels like we're beyond the days of having half the freshman class running around on game day when it's clear they could use more time to develop.
