Roster & Needs As Of April 14...

[Football fan but basketball lurker who is excited about Gerry and watched AO play as a student]

Do you think Cuse has room in their budget to still make a big splash or 2? C and PG, right? I know it's unrealistic but would grabbing Hines from Seton Hall and Mingo make this a preseason ranked team?

I'll hang up and listen, thx

There is no way Hines is coming here, he is asking for too much money. I have not seen any connection to SU and Mingo.

I mentioned it's unrealistic. Let me rephrase then: how far away do you think the roster is, from a preseason perspective, to be considered for preseason rankings?

Looking at the current state of the team, here are the guys we have committed and what IMO we still need for next year.

Returning Players
Sadiq White - Forward, Sophomore, 6-9
Kiyan Anthony - Guard/Forward, Sophomore, 6-5

Committed Transfers
Gavin Doty - Guard, Junior, 6-5
Tasman Goodrick - Center, Senior, 6-10
Garwey Dual - Guard, Senior, 6-5
Aiden Tobiason - Guard/Forward, Junior, 6-5
Mark Morano Mahmutovic - Guard/Forward, Freshman, 6-7
Ryan Moesch - Guard, Freshman, 6-0

That is 8 players on the roster, leaving 5-7 remaining adds. We are rumored to be connected to:

Francis Folefac - Forward (Siena)
Hudson Mayes - Guard (UC San Diego)

We currently have:

3 Guards
3 Guards/Small Forwards
1 Power Forward
1 Center

Need at least two more big guys, probably one that can be a PF/C backup hybrid and one true starting center. Wouldn't be bad to have a developmental center either and I wouldn't mind another 6-8/6-9 wing. Then the rest are either improvements to our current roster construct (high end PG or the like), or backups.
You can cross Mayes off

yea I'm trying to figure out when their season went off the rails. Looks like he started through early December then they got beat down by 20 to Nebraska and he lost his starting spot.

A Q3 loss to KState at home so a 5-5 start to the season and they never got going. Finished the season like 3-9 and he was barely playing.

Obviously he was way overpaid for his output, (reddit threads say 1.8MM).

What interests me is that his Creighton #'s were identical to his Freshman year where he was Big10 Rookie of the year he just played half the mins each game. Was on the court only 11 mins a game last year, while his rookie year was 22 mins a game.

If you put this guy on the court healthy and 25 mins a game he should be a double double guy...

If the price is right, seems like you take him.
Yup. Yet, I don't think we should readily dismiss out of hand the issues mentioned from the posters/fans with ties to the Creighton program. I'm assuming the staff has done the due diligence to get a handle on that if they had him campus.

Objectively, you have a 6-10 big who was the freshman of the year in BiG and then averaged 17/7 over the 19 games he played in his sophomore season before the finger injury. That's proven production not only in the P5, but in one of best leagues. Because of the way his season played out at Creighton, you now have the chance to add proven productivity like that for a player we would not be able to afford had he lived up to his Iowa stats. Lightening in a bottle scenario IF he returns to form. Although I suspect his NIL will still need to be $1M+

I can’t say too much online, look at my handle for a clue and then go to a Creighton message board and see what they say. Again health is not an issue, he put up great stats at IOWA as they played zero defense and ran up and down the floor, getting easy/ garbage baskets. He is a good kid, tries hard and is a team player but go watch his CU tape.
Looking at the highlights, I didn’t necessarily see a lot of easy baskets. Saw a lot of back to the basket game that other than Lampkin we haven’t had in a long time. And also saw a guy who can finish with both hands. Nice baby hook, knows how to lean into the defender to create space, etc.

That doesn’t mean he didn’t get a lot of garbage baskets, but he clearly has an offensive skill set.

While a high end portal PG would still be a nice addition, if that doesn't come into fruition, if needed Four-star Ryan Moesch looks skilled enough to contribute as a freshman.

You figure he'll be on the Syracuse campus over the summer training with the S&C staff, getting stronger while also playing lots of D1 level pick-up with his future college teammates. Though undersized, his being a plus athlete kinda mitigates his lack of height/weight. Not saying he has Jonny Flynn-type hops but he's the same height and has a similarly shifty and bouncy style like Flynn who played his way to the league as a top ten pick @ SU so there is a precedent for smaller Upstate PGs excelling early @ Cuse.

Again, not saying RM is JF as a prospect, just pointing out their similarities. I think Moesch's floor is "serviceable" but I also think his ceiling to surprisingly flourish is high if he's called upon to play as a frosh. Glad he chose Cuse.

Jon Rothstein came out with his preseason top 45 as of Monday. We were ranked 43rd.
A bubble team really would be something. And seeing this collection of players that’s where we are. Sad.

I highly recommend you go look at the roster Clemson had this past year and where they came from. Even without the remaining pieces we still must add there is a lot more talent on this roster than they had. They weren’t the only team either. The eyes , portal ranking and name bias see what they want to see.

It took the energy and play of one of the most questionable guys on our roster (on paper), William Kyle, to ensure we won as many games as we did last year despite the short comings of a roster full of higher rated transfers. Pair that with one of the guys who still fought and contributed in Nate Kingz. The rest of the portal guys and those highly regarded returnees played way below their prized pedigree and then there was the extremely poor coaching and here we are.
