SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 13 Syracuse University men's rowing team will host No. 9 Cornell and No. 12 Navy on Saturday morning for the Goes Trophy and Stagg Cup on the Onondaga Lake Outlet. Racing will begin at 8 a.m. at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse in Liverpool, N.Y.

Saturday marks the 60th time that the three programs will compete for the Goes Trophy. A history-filled tradition, Navy has won the hardware for the varsity eight competition 26 times, Cornell has taken home top honors on 22 occasions, and Syracuse has come out victorious 11 times. Syracuse is looking to collect the Goes Trophy for the first time since 2011.

"The Goes Trophy is traditionally the one race the alumni seem to care the most about," head coach Dave Reischman said. "It's been going on since the early 1950s. It's always a battle. Cornell and Navy are very much like us, blue-collar crews not afraid to grind it out through the middle of a boat race. It's produced some very spectacular racing over the years."

Beginning in 1967, the Stagg Cup has been presented to the team compiling the most points on the day. Navy has won the cup on 27 occasions, Cornell has been victorious 15 times, and Syracuse has won six times. Like the Goes Trophy, Syracuse has not won the Stagg Cup since 2011.

Five races will be held on Saturday morning. The day will begin with the Goes Trophy competition, the varsity eight race, at 8 a.m. The second, third, and fourth varsity competitions will follow in 20-minute increments. The freshman eight will conclude the day at 9:20 a.m.

Fans can listen to live audio from the race, courtesy of the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association, here. One can also call 712-432-4418 for updates on their phones.

Following racing, trophy presentations will be held at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse at 9:30 a.m. Following the presentation, two boats will be dedicated, honoring Rob and Sue Edson.

Cornell Defends Goes and Stagg Cups
Syracuse dedicates two boats to honor Rob and Sue Edson

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – The No. 13 Syracuse University men's rowing team raced No. 9 Cornell and No. 12 Navy for the Goes Trophy and Stagg Cup on Saturday morning at the Onondaga Lake Outlet. Cornell defended its titles from a season ago, sweeping the competition.

"A tough day for us on Onondaga Lake," head coach Dave Reischman said. "Cornell and Navy are really strong programs. They did a great job today, so hats off to them. We didn't feel in the varsity eight quite as clean in our execution as last week. We didn't settle down and move the boat like we were capable of."

Cornell won the varsity eight competition, edging out Navy's top boat by less than a
second. Syracuse covered the course in 5:49, 11 seconds behind the Big Red. With the victory in the varsity eight, Cornell retained the Goes Trophy for the 23rd time.

The Orange's best showing came in the second varsity race, where the crew finished in second place at 5:51.5 Cornell won the race with a time of 5:47. The Big Red would go on to win the third and fourth varsity races and Navy would take home runner-up finishes in those events.

Following the trophy presentations, the men's rowing program dedicated two boats, honoring Rob and Sue Edson. Rob worked for Syracuse Athletics for 21 years before becoming the athletic director at Onondaga Community College in 2011. In his time at Syracuse, he supervised the men's soccer, men's rowing, and women's rowing programs. Rob passed away unexpectedly at the age of 45 in September 2013. Sue, Rob's wife, has worked for Syracuse Athletics since 1990 in its athletic communications office. She has received multiple recognitions for excellence in her field, including an induction into the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame in 2012. Sue and Rob have two children, Thomas and Tracey.

"Everything Rob has meant to the program over the years, not just during my tenure but before," commented Reischman. "Rob was a great sport administrator. He would be at every race. He got to know the student-athletes. He is just one of those guys in athletics that means the world to everyone he comes into contact with. I think what he meant to the program and the support he gave us was fantastic."

The Orange will return to waters next weekend when it races No. 8 Boston University and No. 18 Columbia for the Conlan Cup on the Charles River in Boston, Mass. Syracuse is looking to win its first Conlan Cup since the spring of 2012.
