Peter Sampson of has posted that it appears Notre Dame and ACC close to an agreement...source at NCSTATE will not confirm but indicates there is activity. If this goes down it appears that Notre Dame would place all other sports in ACC and play up to 6 games a year against ACC schools...
Before being upset about this...think about this in the following ways:
1. It provides out of conference games for the ACC against a strong, fairly strong opponent
2. It appears that Notre Dame football does not get special dispensation to bowls as it would if member of ACC--so different than BE agreement...and better
3. It is presumed that ESPN would reopen the TV contract with ACC...obviously increasing per team dollars--Notre Dame may keep its deal for time being with NBC
4. Goal is for ND to fully join ACC in a reasonable period of time..TBD

In a way this may screw the Big East...but then again help stabilize the ACC and bring in substantial new dollars...

THIS HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED AT THIS POINT...but there is sufficient reason to bring this to your attention...!

Like it if true - especially #2. Looks weighted to the ACC side.

I don't know how this hurts the big east? It may be the best thing that could happen to them.

if true, this crushes the Big East. They are in the middle of TV contract negotiations and just lost a member.

I'll believe there is actually a 5% chance of this happening when it appears here:

No, the Trib is not a Great Metropolitan Newspaper by any means, but they provide very thorough 24/7/365 coverage of Notre Dame football. If anyone is an outside "insider" these guys are.

I'm all for it as long as the ACC puts a time frame (10 year hardcap) on their "partial" membership. Having them play 6 games against ACC opponents is big. Also, the importance of reopening the TV negotiations cannot be understated.

However, if ND is the 15th member (albeit partial)...does the ACC bring in a 16th member now? If so, who?

You could make ND a semi member and allow them to play in one division. Make four pods like so:

ND, Pitt, BC
VT, UVA, SU, MD
Clemson, GA Tech, UNC, Duke
FSU, Miami, NC St, Wake

You rotate divisions among the pods. Which means one division has 7 teams and the other has 8. That way everyone gets ND once in three years. ND only plays teams in their division (6 games). This allows them to have 6 OOC games (USC, Navy, Purdue, Mich St, Michigan, plus 1).

The teams in the opposite division all play 9 ACC games, as well as Pitt and BC. However 2 teams in ND's division would only be able to play 8 ACC games. That is actually a good thing. One year those will be FSU and Miami. The next year Clemson and GA Tech. The year after VT and UVA. That is a huge benefit to FSU, Clemson, and GA Tech who all have OOC rivalries. Playing 9 ACC games plus the OOC rival makes things difficult. Having a break once every three years is huge. Miami and VT also get this break and can use it to schedule a premier OOC game once every three years without making it too hard of an overall schedule. Having more schedule flexibility for premier OOC games will add value to the ESPN contract.

IF these rumors are true I don't see pods being used except in basketball. In my opinion, if the ACC takes ND minus football -- as is being reported -- it is going to be Notre Dame and nobody else. That means 15 teams for the basketball conference, probably split into three divisions. In this scenario Syracuse would play 4 teams Home and Away (say BC, Pitt, ND and Maryland) and the other ten teams once; a total of 18 games.

I can live with this if true, although I hate the hybrid model.

I would rather have them add UConn and Rutgers, I know a lot of people on this board don't care about SU's ties to the NYC area but I live in NJ and its HUGE to have at least a couple local rivals especially in the NYC area. I'm a diehard Syracuse/big east fan and I don't know if I will ever truly be an ACC fan. If the ACC was able to pick up UConn and Rutgers, combine them with Pitt, SU, BC, Maryland, Va Tech, and Miami and call it ACC north, I would be more accepting because it would feel like the old Big East. Btw, what did Notre Dame bring to the Big East besides instability? I believe the Big East also had a contract in place for games with the hopes of getting Notre Dame as a full member in the future. How did that work out?

okay, here is something else to think about..ACC has increased price to leave conference to about $50 million...now that is going to keep us all together for a long, long time. By the way, more to come on the Orange Bowl...source says to keep an ear open. Pleased I was able to get this information to you all late last night..early morning...'Cuse board sort of broke the story!

Thanks for passing along all this info, arb!

No offense, but you obviously havent read my previous posts... this was a done deal and without giving away my source over the past 3 months I have given the story as it is happening...have faith in your poster and fans...'go Cuse

I've followed your posts and have heard rumblings from people I know with ACC connections. I was just piggybacking off the Maryland Mole comment. Hence the winking eye.

Yecchhh.

I just don't like ND.

And I don't like partial memberships.

Yecchhh.

Yes, thank you very much arb. Do you believe that ND will eventually join for football too and if so, how long will it take?

is that how we got usc on the schedule
