So I was asked to go to the Rutgers game, but I believe I'll be sitting right behind the RU bench (the person who offered is getting tickets through someone in the program, I believe). Would it be in bad taste to go but root for the 'Cuse?

Last I checked this is still America. If you have the means and ways to acquire a ticket to a sporting event then you are entitled to wear the apparel of any team you desire.

Just use common sense. Treat their fans as you would want to be treated. Simple as that in my opinion. And if you overdue it a few times, no biggy. Just don't be obnoxious. Some may feel you have a right to be obnoxious. I personally don't but to each his own I guess.

It depends on who will be there with you. Don't embarass your friend. Think Elaine Benes

Proper etiquette would be to stand until Syracuse hits their first field goal at the beginning of each half and then once they have you should sit down but change Lets Go Orange at the top of your lungs for the remainder of each half.

Hakim Warrick's senior year I sat 3 rows behind the Villanova bench. As I stood at the beginning of the game clapping, 2 guys who looked to be in their 80's were griping and cussing about me standing. I turned around and politely said that it's a Syracuse tradition and I'm going to honor it. They shut up. It didn't take long to score. We crushed them. I cheered all game long. It was great!
LGO!

I once worked with someone who had a buddy who was an HC of a NYC team. One of his players was playing for the Johnnies at the time and when they came to the Dome he got some tix and was kind enough to invite me. We sat a few rows behind their bench and were mostly among friends as family of Johnnies. I sat on my hands and bit my lip the whole game. I didn't root for the Johnnies and was very quiet. I thought of myself as a guest and didn't want to be a jerk. Plus, they were the best seats I had ever sat in and didn't want to burn that bridge.

The Elaine reference is a good one.

My son was able to score a pair of tickets from a friend who is a season ticket holder in sec 205. Looks like some of the RU "faithful" would rather put a few bucks in their pockets than support their team, a la SJU.

The person who invited me told me I can "of course" root for Syracuse. But then he tells me he's getting tickets from one of the assistant coaches. I feel like that might be awkward.

By all means, go and wear an SU shirt. I would just play it cool though and quietly revel in rooting for the good guys. I think 98% of people, coaches and staffers included, would be ok with it as long as you are respectful. Just keep in mind that Rice has a temper and if things are going very poorly for RU, he may turn around and see you and have you removed.
