Too much to unpack for you here. People are excited about playing a local opponent and the immense bonus of having it be an OOC P5 (UConn, Colgate can’t say that) is so important. Their fans are delusional and loud, and that makes it fun. You seem to be looking for ways to rain on that. Just be happy SU fans are excited about more games. I said what I said about it being a rivalry because I have little interest in trying to change your mind. Really? Southern Cal recruits Southern Cal? I asked about San Diego. Even so, my question was whether or not SDSU openly attacked USC in the press in order to sway a recruiting tilt the way Schiano and Rutgers did to SU. It’s not really a comparison. That said, the point of my Mac story was that the recruiting battle for NJ predates GRob and continues today. If anything, GRob giving it up entirely is what makes the series renewal more important. If WVU is the superior rivalry and it may be, why don’t we play them? If having a trophy is some important factor for you, why was it that it wasn’t played for the last time we played? I was at SU when that trophy was created (1993). It changed nothing in how the game was viewed. I know of none of the Colgate traditions, mostly because we play Colgate what once every 20 years? They haven’t won since 1950? That’s a rivalry? We make shirts for a series renewal with PSU, they don’t. I’m fairly certain I heard Mike Tirico say it hasn’t been a rivalry for PSU since 1987. We have beaten them 3 times since 1967, and 2 of them were ‘87 and ‘88. The win differential between us and PSU is 20. Between us and RU, 18. Rutgers has won 6 of the last 8. They probably need it more than us, but it’s really not that different than us and PSU. Seems to me it’s only a rivalry if you say it is. Just stating the truth. Also, Tom Coughlin no longer plays or coaches at SU, but I think he spoke with the team last year. Moose Johnston also no longer plays, nor Floyd Little, or Jim Brown, and yet they have had pre-game speeches for the SU football team. I was only sharing a tale I heard of one such pregame speech given by Coach Mac imparted to me by my roommate who was on the team at the time. Don’t be so condescending.
