Ok, I'll bite. I knew I'd regret starting this thread. I'm 44 and a Syracuse grad, as is my father. My perspective on Syracuse goes back to 1960 - through my dad. During my years on the Hill, the football team was at its apex - starting with my freshman year in '87. I was at the Dome when the drought against Penn State ended. I've been through the ups and downs. I'd like to call PSU our greatest gridiron rival. But I can't in good conscience do so as the universities and programs don't quite match. Maybe some day, but not right now. I think it highly unlikely that any PSU fan born after 1965 would consider Syracuse a big rival. There's just not a ton of passion between the schools these days. Perhaps I am wrong about this. And perhaps this will change as we improve and they (hopefully) remain mediocre. On to Rutgers. It is exceptionally bothersome to me that Syracuse is 3-7 over the last 10 years against Rutgers. After starting the series with (If I'm not mistaken) a 27-5 record. This trend is frankly unimaginable. It annoys me that, more times than not, we seem to be hoping that a recruit chooses us over Rutgers - rather than expecting. It galls me to say this, but the schools, to a certain degree, are similar - academically, geographically, stadium size, and (currently) in terms of national profile. And the schools are fighting over the same recruiting turf - while residing in different conferences. Their fans are annoying. Their colors and mascot are queso. And the Big 10 is easy to root against. Don't get me wrong - I love playing B.C. again. That's great. And it's a good rivalry that will only get better. But I don't despise them - maybe I will soon, we'll see. Case in point, if BC is playing Rutgers, who would you root for? I'll wager 8 out of 10 would grudgingly say BC. I feel the same way about Pitt as well as West Virginia. But Rutgers? It's another level of antipathy. It would be great - each year - to beat Rutgers, beat the Big 10 and win the recruiting turf battle - as NY's College Team. And after 10 years of doing so repeatedly, drop them from the schedule. But for right now - they are arguably our biggest rival. And rivalries are what college sports are all about. And I for one would look forward to a game each year - and everything that entails including dealing with their ridiculous fans. Blast away.
