We constantly fualt him for the things he does wrong or poorly. He has no pocket presence, doesn't know where the rush is coming from. He holds onto the ball too long. He runs poorly and slides at the wrong time. He has no touch on his passes and can't throw deep. He sound slike one of the worst quarterbacks in the country. The irony, of course, is that he's going to own the SU record book on passing. To a great extent, he already does. He's ahd the two highest completion totals in a seaosn and will top both figures this year. He's got the most completions in a game and for a career, (counting what he's done this year). He's got the most passing yards in a game, a season and will have the career record by the end of the year, (barring injury). He's got the third highest completion percentage for a career, (and will probalby be second when he finishes), and the fourth for a season, (he'll probably be second behind Paulus after this year). He'll set the season record for passing yards per game this year, which he just missed last year. Career will be tougher, (he came in at 155 to Marvin Graves' 196). He's tied with the two Donny Macs for TD passes in a season with 22 and will likely top that this year. He's unlikely to catch McNabb for the career record, (he now has 54, McNabb ahd 77). he has the most TD passes in a game with 5. Of course we throw more now than ever before, so his numbers are going to seem "inflated" compared to past quarterbacks, (maybe theirs were deflated?). But he also sat behind Paulus as a freshman and McNabb and Graves started for four years. Even his critics have got to admit that the days of SU quarterbacks going 5 for 20 are over. So what does this oft-criticized kid do right? Through these eyes, (never played or coached the game but have watched it for half a century), I think he knows the offense, (maybe better than his OC does), and can, when given time, do the check-downs to the right receiver and throws the intermediate pass over the middle very well, (so well we should be using it more often than we do). Also, when he's allowed to get in a rhythm by passing the ball most of the time, (such as the first drive when he had four completions in five plays- the other being a run- for 51 yards), his confidence seems to grow and he does everything better. I'm sure he's got the confidence and respect of the coaches and his teammates, which is no small thing for a QB. Does anybody else have anything to add about what this rather prolific player does well?
