Sabonis

the running of the Joke

His motor might even be stronger than his footwork and skills - which is saying something. He's largely gotten over it, but he can be foul prone and when on the verge of foul trouble his defense really suffers and can be exploited.

This will be our big key against him. We don't have the bodies to stop him offensively -- we have to really attack him when we're on offense, make the refs call fouls; Mali and G have to be very aggressive getting into the paint.

Would Sabonis guard Lydon if they were both in the game ? If so, I want to Tyler put it on the deck as much as he did last game when he was going at Harris

He's a big-time problem.

I imagine he'll be the one taking the ball at the foul line in the middle of the zone. He can hit that open jumper if Coleman doesn't move up to cover him. If the guards or forwards move to cover him, he's a decent-enough passer for a big man to kick it out to a three-point shooter or throw it underneath the basket for a score to Wiltjer.

On other possessions they'll probably try to get him to post up Coleman one-on-one - a matchup he's likely to dominate with his footwork. If working against Lydon he'll simply back him down with his strength. We'll need to quickly double or triple team him when that happens and hopefully cause a turnover. Lydon should also practice his flops this week.

Not to mention the offensive rebounds.

It's the biggest challenge of the game.

G to the rescue! Drive to the basket young man!

Dwayne Shintzius is going to shut us down!

I remember that game!

4. Seikaly stuffs Schintzius

In the days leading up to the 1987 East Region semifinals, Florida center Dwayne Schintzius was quoted in several newspapers, bragging that he would dominate Syracuse center Rony Seikaly.

But Seikaly turned the tables on the brash Gator.

Seikaly scored 33 points and picked off nine rebounds, leading Syracuse to an 87-81 win over Florida at the Meadowlands.

In the Elite Eight, Seikaly out-played North Carolina's J.R. Reid, finishing with 26 points and 11 boards in a 79-75 win over the Tar Heels.

I think Coleman will play very sparingly. He's too slow and won't be able to handle his footwork.

We'll go "small" with Lydon, Roberson, Richardson, G, and Franklin/Cooney. It will be about recovering in the lane quickly and erasing some of what he does with athleticism.

I think Roberson needs a Dayton/Duke like run of rebounds. Limit put backs.

I also think G and Richardson will be in the lane all day. As much as Sabonis creates issues for us, G does for them.

I expect DC2 to play quite a bit. He is coming off the best half of his career in the MTSU game.

And his dad pizzed me off!
Not sure what you're referring to, but must have been while at Portland or the Olympics maybe? Anyway you have your reasons.

But for the young ones a bit of history. His father (Arvydas) was a legend in Europe in the 80's. By the time he got outside the Iron Curtain his knees were shot, and he still managed to have a very good NBA career (pizzing people off is a good indicator ;) He'd have been a perennial All-Star, if not a Hall of Famer. As I recall Bill Walton called him a 7'3" Larry Bird at the time.

So the kid has good genes and it shows. Going to be tough to deal with for our bigs.

I'd love for that to happen - I just think he's a liability on defense and Sabonis is an NBA big. MTSU had no one like him.

I was thinking the exact opposite. I think Lydon will get the vast majority of the C minutes in an attempt to stretch the defense so we can exploit Wiltjer more and hopefully draw some fouls on Sabonis by keeping him moving.

Sorry. I mixed Arvydas up with Alexander Belov in the '72 olympics fiasco. Way off.

I agree this has to be the plan. I'm concerned on defense we will be so focused on Sabonis they will get the ball to their guards on the elbow for 3's that we can't get back on. If they hit a few it could open of pandoras box.
