When I was working in TV, they used to have a "Broadcasters vs. SU Football" basketball game at Manley. I played on the broadcast squad. We were supposed to have some ringers, one of them being Roosevelt Bouie. Our other ringer was going to be Pearl. For whatever reason, Pearl ended up not being able to make it.

I was so disappointed I didn't get the chance to occupy the same court as a living legend. I'd played with Allen Griffin and Preston Shumpert at Archbold, but the Pearl was on a whole other level. We lost to the football squad that day, and with Pearl I'm sure we would have won. I'm pretty sure it turned out he was sick at that point, and why he couldn't make it.

I never got to see the Pearl play, but as a kid I heard the stories, and saw some of the highlights. Even the chance to play with him was a thrill.

As a side-note, I almost ended  Mo Jackson's football career that day. I believe that's probably why they don't do those kind of games anymore.
