Mike Brown has gotten a lot of criticism over the years, much of it deserved. Who can forget the "If it's Brown, Flush it Down!" signs from the 90's and early 2000's? But there are 2 things that few people realize about him, 1- He is a sound business man. He's not some rich guy that owns a football team. The Bengals are his business, if they don't make money, he don't make money. And 2 - He treats people with class, respect and compassion. That may mean he holds onto coaches longer than he should (see Dave Shula and Dick Lebeau). That doesn't mean he overspends on players or provides all the "luxuries" many NFL players expect (he's not a luxury guy). But that does mean he will do right by people that have done right by him or that he thinks deserve a second chance, or third chance (see Odell Thurman and Chris Henry). This doesn't surprise me at all. In fact if they had ended up not putting Still on the practice squad, and he had not made another team's it would not surprise me if he had tried to pay for Still's daughter's expenses some way on his own.
The one thing that does confuse me about that article is that it says Still's daughter is back in PA. Last week an article indicated that Still had brought his daughter to Cincinnati in part to be treated at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital which is world renowned for Pediatric Cancer and a lot closer to him. I just looked it up and Cincy's Children's Hospital is ranked #3 for Pediatric Cancer while Philly is #2. I wish the best for the whole Still family. Say what you will about PSU, but their captains are usually pretty class individuals.
