Before Bill O'Brien replaced Joe Paterno at Penn State, he spent five seasons with the
New England Patriots. He was
Tom Brady's quarterbacks coach for his final three years with the team and directed the Pats' No. 2-ranked offense as their offensive coordinator in 2011 before departing for PSU. We've known all along that he had aspirations to return to the NFL as a head coach, so it's no surprise that he has reworked his contract to make it easier to depart the college ranks.
"Penn State coach Bill O'Brien amended his contract last summer with the intent to lower the buyout any NFL team would have to pay the school and make it easier for him to jump to the pros, a copy of the Nittany Lions coach's contract provided to ESPN reveals, and there already have been conversations to reduce the NFL buyout even further,"
ESPN NFL Insider Schefter wrote.
"The restated contract shows O'Brien changed the formula for his buyout and reduced the price of an NFL buyout from $19.33 million last year to $6.48 million for this year, per the contract, whereas the buyout another school would have to pay Penn State for O'Brien is $11.08 million."
It's unclear whether PSU will commit to lowering the buyout number even further -- they likely don't have much motivation to do so -- but an NFL team committed to landing O'Brien may well be willing to fork over the $6.48 million secure his services. Last season, O'Brien drew interest from the
Philadelphia Eagles,
Cleveland Browns,
Arizona Cardinals and
San Diego Chargers. As NFL coaching hot seats have warmed up in recent weeks, O'Brien's name has been heard in connection with the
Houston Texans,
Minnesota Vikings and
Detroit Lions.
