We had opportunities in prior years (pre-2003), but that was 8-10 years earlier .. a completely different time when the BE was still a functioning conference. By the time DM took control of program in 2009, the BE's days were numbered and SUFB was on life support.  GRob had just finished a disastrous 5-37 campaign, which included the only back to back double digit loosing seasons, and the worst 4 year average, in program history.

Marrone not only turned the program around by going 8-5 his second year (with a bowl win), he was successful at just the right time. The summer after that year -- the 2010-11 season -- the ACC was looking to add 2 schools and we got the offer in September (2011). So with this background, it's clear that Marrone's success was critical to an ACC invitation. Not a moment too soon either. By that time the BEC was coming apart as the non-FB schools could not complete with competing conference (FB) revenues. The ACC easily could have taken another school (WVa, UConn, etc...), but it took SU and Pitt .. mostly thanks to Marrone.
