#3 Syracuse def. #11 Dayton: The Dayton Flyers are not a team that you would expect to make a splash in the tournament but they did with a win over Ohio State. That splash would turn into a tidal wave with a win against Syracuse. Too much fire power on Cuse's bench for the Flyers to keep up.
PAP

ESPN.com listed Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins as a possible candidate.

Hopkins is in his 19th season on the Syracuse staff. However, might he one day be a candidate to replace Jim Boeheim, who is 69 and in his 38th season as coach at Syracuse?

Howland, Wardle top candidates as search for new MU coach begins

No. 3 seed Syracuse minus-7 over No. 11 seed DaytonDayton’s due for a letdown after an emotional victory over an in-state rival it was eager to play. Syracuse has a de facto home court advantage in Buffalo, and seemed to use the support to regain some moxie in a blowout 77-53 victory over Western Michigan as an 13-point favorite Thursday.

Overall, Krzyzewski has more victories (983) and more NCAA tournament victories (82) than any other coach in history. He also had 26 NCAA losses, trailing only Syracuse's Jim Boeheim (30 and counting), Lute Olson of Iowa and Arizona (28), and UNC's Dean Smith (27). Krzyzewski's defeats match much-traveled Eddie Sutton, who worked at Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State
Duke Report

So here are the next round matchups: Pitt will play Florida, Syracuse gets Dayton, Virginia takes on Memphis and UNC gets Iowa State. No guarantees in any of those although Syracuse seems the most likely to advance.
Duke Report

Creighton is one of four schools with a postseason win in seven straight seasons, joining Kansas, North Carolina and Syracuse. The only 10 teams to win an NCAA Tournament game each of the past three years include Creighton, Florida, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisvile, Michigan State, North Carolina, Saint Louis and Syracuse.

ESPN’s Stats & Information Group reports that McDermott joined Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson (2010) and Carmelo Anthony (2003) as the only BIG EAST players since 2000 to have 30 points and 10 rebounds in an NCAA Tournament game.

5. Syracuse, despite its late-season struggles, didn’t have many problems with Western Michigan in its opener. Can Dayton figure out a way to score against the Cuse zone? That’s tough enough with a week to practice, but with little more than a day of prep time? That’s difficult. As a team, Dayton shoots 37.5 percent from the field, which is 56th in the country. The Flyers will need to shoot at least that well to have a shot at the upset.
TSN

No. 3 Syracuse vs. No. 11 Dayton (7:10 p.m., TBS): Syracuse seemingly snapped out of its funk against Western Michigan, although Dayton will pose a stiffer test. The Flyers got theNCAA Tournament off to a rousing start with its win over Ohio State on Thursday afternoon. Dayton will be able to spread out the 2-3 zone and knock down shots, but it has to be able to care of the ball. At the other end, the Flyers have to continue doing an excellent job on the defensive glass.

DIFFICULTY PICKING

Picking a NCAA basket is so tough because how a team plays late in the regular season often doesn’t matter. Look at Syracuse, for example. The Orange was a horrible shooting team late in the year, including converting just 32.7 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from 3-point range in a loss to NC State in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.

Syracuse though shot 49.1 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from 3-point range in its first NCAA tourney game, a rout of Western Michigan.

Eagle Tribune

With two double-doubles, the Vols had multiple double-doubles in an NCAA Tournament game for the second time in history. The only other came in 1977 when Ernie Grunfeld (26 points, 12 rebounds), Bernard King (23 points, 12 rebounds) and Reggie Johnson (17 points, 10 rebounds) achieved the feat in an overtime loss to Syracuse.

(3) Syracuse (28-5) vs. (11) Dayton (24-10)
6:10 p.m., TBS

Syracuse resembled the team that opened the season 25-0 on Thursday, whipping Western Michigan. The Orange dominated the glass 41-25 and will look to continue that trend against the guard-heavy Flyers. The Flyers did a solid job against Ohio State's backcourt, holding Shannon Scott and Lenzelle Smith Jr. to a combined 4-of-13 shooting while forcing Aaron Craft into five turnovers.
Chicago Tribune

No. 3 Syracuse vs. No. 11 Dayton: The key for Dayton will be a simple one: don’t allow the Syracuse zone to slow them down on the offensive end of the floor. If the Flyers can move the ball consistently they’ll have a chance against the Orange, who on the other end need Trevor Cooney to build on his 18-point outing against Western Michigan.
NBC Sports Talk

Wisconsin was a No. 5 seed last year but lost its first game to 12th-seeded Mississippi. The Badgers played in the Sweet 16 the two years prior, losing to top-seeded Syracuse in 2012 and Butler in 2011.

Takeaway experts • Wright State leads the nation in turnover margin at nearly 10 per game and tops three top-20 schools at this regional. Syracuse ranks 14th at plus-5.3 while Kentucky (plus-4.9) is 19th after ranking in the top five over the past four seasons.

Orange seeking first win • A Syracuse win would mark its first in six attempts. The Orange have come close in their last two trips, including a 61-56 loss to Creighton last spring.

Jerami Grant, Syracuse: Although teammate C.J. Fair leads the Orange in scoring, Grant is just as important to the Orange’s success. His length in the 2-3 zone was key in the Orange’s 25-0 start to the season, and when back spams reduced his minutes the Orange suffered to a 3-5 record to close the season. Grant looked to be at full strength Thursday while scoring 16 points in a blowout win against Western Michigan. The Orange face upset-minded Dayton, but Syracuse is the clear favorite with the amount of talent on its roster.
Washington Post

-
Dayton: The Flyers face a vulnerable Syracuse team that's certainly beatable. Coach Archie Miller will have to prep his team for the Orange's 2-3 matchup zone and staying in front of Tyler Ennis will be a top priority. If Dayton reaches the Sweet 16, a clash with Kansas would be enticing based on how healthy the Jayhawks are and if Joel Embiid is back. Ceiling: Sweet 16.

Looking ahead to the Sweet Sixteen, I spot four potential games that would be great on the gridiron: Florida vs. UCLA, Stanford vs. Syracuse, Tennessee vs. Texas or Michigan and Oregon or Wisconsin vs. Baylor.

-
DAYTON (plus-7) vs. SYRACUSE (Saturday in Buffalo): Major mismatch: The Flyers won’t have any emotional fuel left after the thriller with Ohio State, while Syracuse was cold-blooded efficient against Western Michigan. One day isn’t nearly enough time for Dayton to prepare for the Orange zone. Pick: Syracuse.
