Chris McCullough Limited by Foul Trouble in Jordan Brand Classic (PS; Ditota)

Chris McCullough had spent two days practicing with his Jordan Brand All-America team here in his hometown. He worked out with West teammates Cliff Alexander, Stanley Johnson and Emmanuel Mudiay, three players who combined to score 66 of his team's 147 points in a loss to the East. He had hoped to make a similar splash.

But from almost the moment he took the court at the Barclays Center, McCullough was paralyzed by foul trouble. The Syracuse University recruit committed five of them on Friday. Those fouls limited him to 12 minutes during a night of creative, constant offense. He scored four points, grabbed two rebounds. His West team lost 158-147...

..."He's more of a 3-man. He can do things with the ball," Boeheim said. "His shooting can be in and out, but he can get better at that. He's a 3-man in a big man's body."...

Malcolm Brogdon Averaged 14.8 ppg as a sophomore

Virginia Season Wrap: Cavs Stellar Season Could Just Be the Start (PS; Stevens)

Louisville Season Wrap: Cards Will Make ACC Tougher Next Season (PS; Stevens)

Record: 31-6 (16-2 American)

Last seen: Having its national title defense come to an end in the regional semifinals with four poor minutes to finish out a 74-69 loss to Kentucky.

What went right: The backcourt. Between Russ Smith, Luke Hancock, Chris Jones and Terry Rozier, the Cardinals had plenty of guards who could make like difficult for opponents. Smith, of course, was the star of the show and averaged 18.2 points.

It was also a breakout year for Montrezl Harrell, the one-time Virginia Tech commit who averaged 14.0 points and 8.4 rebounds as a sophomore for Louisville.

What went wrong: Not much. The Cardinals' losses this season were to a who's who of opponents: Kentucky (twice), Memphis (twice), Cincinnati and North Carolina. They plowed through the American (even if a coin flip cost them the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament) and beyond subpar foul shooting didn't have a glaring weakness.

One thing that proved costly was a nonconference schedule that was fairly lackluster beyond facing Kentucky and North Carolina. There were complaints on Selection Sunday about Louisville earning a No. 4 seed, but on paper, that's what it was in part because of the schedule it played.

The NBA season is over for five of the six players with ties to Central New York.

John Wallace

Former Student Athletes Supported in Return to Academic Life (syr.edu; Haley)

John Wallace had always had a general knowledge about the life of Harriet Tubman. But it was a course he took on his return to Syracuse University to finish his degree that made him see something much deeper about the courageous woman who led several hundred slaves to freedom.

The field school course through the Department of Anthropology involves students studying and excavating areas around Tubman’s Auburn, N.Y., home.

“The course was so hands on and in depth,” Wallace says. “She was a very strong, powerful lady. It was an amazing experience to dig up artifacts at the home where she lived and see the elements of the Underground Railroad. I really enjoyed the course.”
