Gamble on Class of 2014 RB Erv Philips Looks Like a Winner (PS; Mink)

Philips' high school guidance counselor, Danielle Marseglia, said Friday afternoon the three-star prospect has a qualifying SAT score and is on track to graduate on June 23. There are still two months left in the final marking period, but as of now, Philips is on course to enroll in Syracuse this summer and start practicing with the team in August.

"We talk about it all the time at a conference level as well as here internally. First thing I would say is that is it very stimulating. I think it is great that students are having these types of conversations. I think it is constructive. It brings out a lot of the issues that have been there for awhile.
"The one thing I feel good about is, a lot of the issues that the kids at Northwestern had and that a lot of student-athletes feel all over the country are issues that we are all taking about anyway.

It began as a state budget plan was being put together. The state offered a quarter of a billion dollars to allow Syracuse University to erect a new stadium and the city of Syracuse to create a new neighborhood of residential, business and even hotel properties in the old Kennedy Square.
The county executive says a city rejection of the plan was a mistake.
"You have to see that that's the opportunity if you want the resources for your public schools, if you want the resources for your infrastructure. If you want a vibrant city, you have to seize those opportunities when they come," said Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney, a Republican.
"It does no one any good to say, let's put a project here just because the money's available. Instead, what the discussion should be about is: is this project is better for the overall community? Then let's move forward," said Miner.

Western Michigan added its name to the list of offers for Bloom junior linebacker Kyle Pugh, a list that already includes Syracuse, Northern Illinois and Bowling Green.
“Coach Brian Callahan (a Western Michigan assistant) visited Bloom last week and told me to give him a call,” Pugh said. “He told me they were going to offer me over the phone. I like Western Michigan, even though I haven’t made a visit yet. I have heard a lot of good things about the facilities and their recruiting.”
