Say What You Will About Cohen, But His Article Re Hunt Today...

This is a good article. He should start working with some of the analytics folks at SU to go even deeper into his analysis.

As I said yesterday (or tried to say), they each have their strengths and weaknesses. The weaknesses get most of the play on this board.

You know the first thing I thought when I read this? The staff probably hates this article more than any of the others. The opposing staff will do their own film study, charting, trending, etc, but I wonder if our staff will ask him to stop making their job easier.

Not meant to be a complaint about the article, I found it very interesting.

McDonald: "We've got really good running backs. We want them to run the ball. I don't want Terrel running the ball. I would rather Jerome or Gulley running the ball."

If he really thinks this, we need a new offensive coordinator yesterday.

McD may have instructed Hunt that if he has any doubt about whether to keep the ball or hand it off, just go ahead and hand the ball off to the guys who have a history of making plays with their legs. I don't have a problem with that.

Hunt should be running the ball when a play breaks down. That added element he brings completely changes the D assignments. Alot of coach-speak out of McD.

Plus being able to read an over play by the D for Smith/Gulley/Morris/McFarland every once in a while.

it shows that locking on really is a function of play calls much of the time. our rcvrs are still running the wrong way which Hurt Allen more than people realize.

people are thinking things are all spread with the qb option to run when many times its just a long handoff from the pistol formation.

hunt is making mistakes , the good thing is many have turned into solid plays.

don't plant seeds of doubt. work to eliminate it. have confidence. make the best decision. he implies that lamichael james wasn't a good back. the qb ran the ball a lot out there

Play 1 is a terrible example of poise in the pocket. Look at the screen-caps, there isn't a Wagner defender within 5 yards of Hunt. That's great O-line play. To take nothing away from Hunt working through his progressions here, but he could have had a sandwich back there while waiting for someone to get open.

I also question how well you can chart how often he looked off his primary receiver using the ESPN3 broadcast. Now if he had the All-22 views, that might be different. It's a nice try and something instead of interviewing guys who are buried on the depth chart, but I don't see anything that makes this better than Rahme's post-game recaps.

Tell you the truth, I for one was not that excited to hear the GM was prepping for his OC gig by visiting NFL camps.

Agreed that Hunt should take off if the play breaks down. The last option in a read option offense is for the QB to just run it. Also, on that play that Cohen used as an illustration of Hunt always handing off, Hunt should have kept it. It was a 25 yd gain because it was against Wagner. Against a better team, if Hunt sees that OLD/DE crash down the line, he has to keep that ball and take it around the end. At least Hunt was decisive though, didn't panic when he saw a defensive front he wasn't prepared for, and didn't put the ball on the ground while trying to decide what to do at the point of attack.

McD in interviews lately reminds me of an assistant director of human resources for a mid-sized corporation. He talks, but doesn't really say anything. I gotta think he's much much more genuine in his communication with his players...I mean people love him and he's got this rep as a recruiter.

I like the fact that he does that. Being generic is safe way of keeping your mouth shut.

Without even watching it, I can guarantee that any analysis done by Cohen would not be better than a similar piece by Rahme. Dave had years of experience and, more importantly, he had the coach's trust. Two things that Cohen will never achieve in his short time here.

makes you wonder what his goals are
