I don't see how anyone can think that a tired and banged up defense has a better chance of forcing a 3 and out than your offense gaining half a yard (after they had gained 9.5 in the 3 prior plays). Not to mention, even if they had forced a 3 and out, the offense would likely be getting the ball back in worse field position than they had before the punt. This doesn't even consider the fact that the season is a bust and the game was out of reach, so, nothing to lose at all.
