The teams will play a total of three games over the course of the weekend, starting with a double header on Saturday, March 7 with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday, March 8, with the final game starting at 12:00 p.m. The Orange is coming off of a 3-2 performance in the Mary Nutter Classic, and has seen success recently against Virginia Tech, leading the all-time series 9-4. Last season the Orange split their four game series with the Hokies which included a thrilling ACC Tournament matchup in which Syracuse trailed by just one run in the top of the sixth inning. Danielle Chitkowski gave the Hokies lots of problems over the course of their series last season, batting an impressive .515 with four doubles and five runs batted in. The Hokies are receiving votes in both the Coaches and the ESPN poll, but are coming off of a two game losing streak after falling to North Carolina in a double header on Monday, March 2. The Last Time Out's Highlights • Julie Wambold knocked in four runs and recorded five hits, giving her 12 RBI's on the season. One of her five base knocks was a walk-off single scoring Sammy Fernandez to defeat Loyola Marymount in the first game of the weekend for the Orange. • Jocelyn Cater pitched a total of 18 innings, retiring 19 opposing hitters by way of the K to give her 72 strikeouts on the season. Her 72 strikeouts give her the third most strikeouts in the ACC in just the fifth most innings pitched this season (55.2). She's been nearly untouchable this season, averaging an astounding 9.05 strikeouts per seven innings with a 2.85 earned run average. The two pitchers ahead of her are Lacey Waldrop (94) of No. 12/11 Florida State and Allyson Frei (87) of Boston College. However, the two have pitched at least 15 innings more than Cater. Frei has thrown 81 innings and has retired 87 by strikeout while Waldrop has thrown 70.2 with 94 strikeouts thus far. • Corinne Ozanne continued to swing a heavy bat, sending three runners home for a team leading 14 RBI's this season and recording her eighth home run. Eight of Ozanne's 14 hits this season have landed on the other side of the outfield fence. Her eighth home run ties her for the conference lead with Virginia Tech's Kelsey Mericka. Ozanne's power has resulted in as many runs batted in as she has hits and the bottom of the lineup has done its job, scoring her 10 times this season. Her success at the plate has forced opponents to pitch around her, giving her nine walks and three times in which she's been hit by a pitch. • Sammy Fernandez was efficient at the plate, as usual. She recorded four hits and scored four runs, giving her a team leading, .380 batting average, 19 hits and 13 runs scored in 2015. She scored the walk-off run against Loyola Marymount. • Mary Dombrowski had a solo jack against Northwestern to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. The home run was a difference maker as Syracuse grinded out a 2-1 victory. • Maddi Doane scored three runs and had three hits in California, giving her 12 and 15 on the season. Her production came at crucial moments as she scored two runs and recorded two hits and a double in the walk-off win against Loyola Marymount, including a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to keep the Orange alive, kick starting the two-out rally that gave Syracuse the 4-3 victory. Doane currently ranks in the top three for the Orange in 11 of the major offensive stat categories, including a team leading six doubles and one triple out of the leadoff spot. • Sydney O'Hara enjoyed her success at the plate, picking up three hits, a double, four runs batted in and a runs scored. Two of her hits and RBI came in the 6-0 victory against Nevada. She also contributed two innings of shutout ball shut the door on the Wolfpack and give Syracuse its first shutout of the season.
