The Hokies, who're receiving votes in both national polls, defeated the Orange 10-2 in six innings the first game and slighted 'Cuse, 2-0 in a pitcher's duel in the latter game. Jocelyn Cater's performance in the second game was the highlight of the day as she showed why she's one of the best to take the circle in the ACC. "Joc (Jocelyn Cater) threw one of her best games so far this year. She gave us every opportunity to have a chance to win but we weren't able to give her any run support. Although its tough to lose a game like that, she only gave up two hits to a very good Virginia Tech team." Head coach Leigh Ross said, "She's really developing into a great leader in the circle for us." Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech Game Two | 2-0, Loss The Highlights • Jocelyn Cater threw six innings, striking out 10 while allowing just one walk and two hits. One of which was a game-deciding home run that would jam most hitters. • Sammy Fernandez reached on an infield single to break up Virginia Tech's no-hitter. The hit was her 20th this season. The Duel In what was the definition of a pitcher's duel, Jocelyn Cater was dominant. The junior threw five scoreless innings before Virginia Tech scored their only two runs of the game in the sixth. Syracuse was held to one hit in the game. It's best chance came in the sixth when Sammy Fernandez slapped a ball to the second baseman and beat the throw for an infield single in the sixth. The single brought Syracuse's RBI leader, Corinne Ozanne, to the plate with two outs. However, after Virginia Tech's Kelly Heinz fell behind, 3-0, she battled back to get Ozanne and hold the Orange scoreless. After hitting the first batter to put the leadoff Hokie on, Cater fought for two outs. One pitch away from silencing Virginia Tech for the sixth straight inning, Kylie McGoldrick inside-outed a pitch that most wouldn't be able to touch and sent it over the left-center wall to give her team the only two runs it needed to defeat the Orange. Syracuse didn't have an answer in the seventh, giving Virginia Tech its second win of the day by a 2-0 score. Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech Game One | 10-2, Loss The Highlights • Sammy Fernandez recorded her 14th run of the season. • Corinne Ozanne recorded her 15th RBI of the season on a double and later scored her 11th run of the year. • Sydney O'Hara helped herself in the first, scoring Ozanne on a single for her seventh RBI of the season. • Annie Toczynski recorded her first career single. • Rachel Burkhardt made two key plays in right to hold off the Hokies from scoring and rocketed a single up the middle for her second career hit. The Blow-By-Blow The Orange kicked off the first picking up two quick runs after Fernandez reached on an error by the first baseman. Ozanne stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field, bringing Fernandez around to score the first run of the game. O'Hara followed up with a single up the middle to score Ozanne, giving 'Cuse a 2-0 lead. O'Hara held the Hokies at bay until they tagged her for three runs, two of which were earned. Virginia Tech worked the bases loaded with no outs and a walk brought in its first run of the game. An error on a blooper to left brought in the tying run and a walk by the ensuing batter gave Tech the lead. Key plays by Maddi Doane and Rachel Burkhardt put an end to the inning limiting the damage to three runs. Two innings later, Virginia Tech struck again with a five-run fourth sparked by a leadoff home run. Back-to-back walks following the home run opened the door for Lindsey Larkin to relieve O'Hara, but two consecutive first-pitch singles and a ground out gave the Hokies a 7-2 lead. O'Hara snagged a line drive for the second but Tech wouldn't be retired without adding one more on a single up the middle, giving Virginia Tech an 8-2 advantage. Syracuse picked up back-to-back singles in the top of the fifth by Burkhardt and Annie Toczynski but two nice plays by Tech's infielders on the right side silenced the Orange. Defensive misplay by the Orange led to Virginia Tech scoring the two runs it needed to finish the game and defeat Syracuse, 10-2.
