I received this email today from Scott Shafer. It summarizes what Rob and Sue Edson have meant to SU Athletics... and it describes a scholarship fund established for their children. Many of you expressed your love for Rob when he died last month, so I thought you might be interested in learning how you can help his children.

"Dear Joyce --

"On Saturday, September 14th Syracuse University lost a treasured family member and alumnus with the passing of Rob Edson at age 45.

"Rob and his wife, Sue Cornelius Edson, have invested a lifetime into the betterment of Syracuse Athletics. Rob spent more than 20 years at Syracuse Universityin a variety of roles within the athletics department - most recently, he served as the Senior Associate Director for Athletics Administration and Chief Financial Officer. Sue is currently the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications and is an important part of the success we enjoy as a football program.

"Rob and Sue’s two young children, Thomas and Tracey, have also been fixtures around the Football Team, attending practices and games in support of mom and dad. While the Team was grinding away at practice, there was Tracey or Thomas at Sue’s side, waiting to help with the post-practice media appointments that Sue is so gracious and adept at facilitating.

"Rob’s passing has been felt deeply within our community, there simply was no one more dedicated to the advancement of scholar-athletes, to the improvement of the Athletic Department, and to the success of our Team on the field. He was matched in his dedication only by Sue – a consistent and unwaveringly positive and constructive influence on our student-athletes and staff members who have been fortunate enough to work with her.

"As Sue, Thomas and Tracey face the difficult task of adjusting to life without Rob, we look to support her and the children as much as possible. In Rob’s memory, a scholarship fund has been established for Thomas and Tracey so that they may have the opportunity to pursue a college education of their own someday.

"Please view the following brief video message from our Team expressing our love for Sue and her family during this difficult time.

Is there a way to donate online?

You can now purchase Rise Up For Rob T-shirts online. There are two shirts available, and all the proceeds will either go to a college fund for Mr. Edson's children or to an OCC scholarship fund. The two versions are available on Mannysonline.com:

Orange version (proceeds go to college fund for Rob's children):http://www.mannysonline.com/product.aspx?id=13071&l=Default&cat=68
Light blue version (proceeds go to OCC scholarship fund):http://www.mannysonline.com/product.aspx?id=13065&l=Default&cat=68

with all due respect to a family who has likely given more to the school than i could ever hope to, dont all school employees families get a free ride or a significant discount to not only the school of the family members employment, but also to many other 'friends of the school' or whatever?

Not all schools participate in this program... and many schools have been scaling back because of financial constraints. Also, those that do participate generally cover only part of tuition... and not such things as room and board. The Edson's were a two-income family -- that suddenly (and at a very young ages) lost their primary wage-earner. Now one smaller salary has to cover taxes, mortgage, utilities, food, heat, transportation, the cost of raising two children, etc. That does not leave much room to save for college expenses.

And, by the way, anyone who heard 14-year-old Thomas deliver a eulogy at his father's funeral... knows what a special young man he is.

I didn't even know Sue or Rob, but knew so much of them. I will be donating, just because they both were and still are a big part of SU athletics. And because he seemed like an incredible person with an incredible family.

Thank you, Linda. I mailed my check yesterday.

For those who wonder why there's a Kentucky address... It's the investment firm where a close relative of Sue works. They will be managing the Fund.

I would hope that working at a college he had a decent million dollar life insurance policy.

OCC, like many colleges, does not automatically provide benefits such as life insurance. It provides employees the opportunity to purchase them through a plan run by an outside company. I assume Rob purchased some sort of policy, but I have no knowledge of what it might have been, and I am certainly not going to ask. I reply to your post only because I don't want people to have a misconception of the family's financial situation. Following Rob's death, SU asked Sue what would be the most meaningful way to honor Rob. Sue said it would be to support a fund created for their children's education. If people want to contribute, great. If they choose not to, that's fine, too. Because of the outpouring of love expressed here for Rob, I wanted to let folks know about the fund. Why do things have to be made more complicated than they are?

It would seem only right that admission to SU would be a matter of academics ONLY Tuition being covered in its entirety.A fund for the possibility of the kids wanting to go to another school is appropriate but Syracuse should be the "fall-back school in terms of $.
