Scott Shafer ranked No. 83 coach in nation by Sporting News, up 27 spots from 2013

83rd my a**. They rank him 6th lowest amongst all Big 5 conference coaches. I guess going to a bowl and winning it your first year as a head coach in a new and better conference with a new staff, new QB, new WRs, new left side of the Oline isn't a good accomplishment. The fact that they moved him up 27 slots only shows how idiotic it was ranking him 110 last year.

Small sample size with just one season. The more important thing is the increase from the year before.

Syracuse football (in recent times) always played better as an underdog. I don't care what some BS ranking system says. In Shafer I trust. He's the real deal.

Exactly. We'll just keep beating the other coaches on the list, blowing up preseason prognostications (again), and turning unheralded recruits into NFL players.

I think there's a Syracuse talking points memo that is from 5 years ago that no one updates from year to year.

wow, The Sporting News - there's a blast from the past. had no idea they were still around (if that's what you want to call whatever they are at this point). kudos to them for posting a list that is Bleacher Report worthy in its level of stupidity.

That's how I look at it.

One side of the phone conversation with the SN editor:

E: Who?
...
E: Shafer?...Oh, Scott Shafer?
...
E: He's from Syracuse? Yeah, s#*% town!
...
E: ...7 and 6? Texas Bowl, yeah...who cares?...in the ACC?...Yeah...
...
E: What?! He cussed out Dabo? LIVE?!! On TV?!!
...
E: You're kidding?!...He actually tweeted that?!
...
E: Yeah...s#*% coach...

Imagine where Jerry Kill would rank if he came down from the press box.

The question that immediately comes to my mind is how are these "Sporting News rankings" determined? Is there some objective criteria? Is it the collective opinion of all of the Sporting News writers? Or (as I suspect) is this just the subjective opinion of the guy who wrote the article?

Chryst at 40? Who did he pay off?

Hey, give him his due, he has a .500 record in two seasons, shouldn't that put him 43 slots ahead of HCSS?? Ridiculous list from a dead publication.
