Yesterday (11/20) the conference with the solidarity chant gave us: UL Monroe (4-7) v. LUS South Alabama (5-6) v. Tennessee New Mexico State (1-10) v. Kentucky Tennessee State (5-6) v. Miss. State Prairie View (7-3) v. Texas A&M Charleston Southern (4-6) v. Georgia Last Saturday (11/13) the chanting was almost as impressive: New Mexico State (1-9) v. Alabama Samford (4-6) at Florida We all know how bad Florida looked against Samford, but hey they won the second half and eeked out the W. Cue the chant? Not exactly, there was a chant that reverberated and it was league-wide, but it was a different tune. Florida needs to change its coach and fast to shore up the image of the conference! Ahh, the intra-conference rivalry, NOT! Down there and on ESPN college football the rivalry with the rest of the college football landscape is all that really matters. Just ask Tony Kornheiser. So, the SEC really doesn't value the age-old notion of November football. Okay then, how did they handle the opposite end of the schedule? Take a look at some of the September out of conference results: 9/4 LSU loses at UCLA (38-27) East Tennessee State U. beats Vandy at Vandy (23-3) 9/11 Pitt beats Tennessee in Knoxville (41-34) 9/18 Stanford beats Vandy in Nashville (41-23) Auburn (6-5) lost on the road to Penn State (7-4) (28-20) Miss State went on the road and lost to Memphis (31-29) 9/25 Missouri goes on the road and loses to Boston College (41-34). BC hasn't scored more than 41 points in any of its remaining games. But hey, they all "play that SEC schedule" doesn't really have legs in 2021. Georgia is the clear #1 nationally, and they have a truly impressive defense. In fact that defense could be historically impressive, but how can anyone know that so far when Georgia is the only ranked team in the SEC East? Georgia has played against three teams who were ranked at game time: Auburn (6-5); Arkansas (7-4); and Kentucky (8-3). Perhaps Kentucky will be ranked this week after that impressive W at home over New Mexico State (1-10)!?! Take a close look at Kentucky's schedule and 3 of their 8 wins are at home against NM State (1-10); UL Monroe (4-7); and Chattanooga (6-5). That's more than 1/3 of their Ws. And then their 2 Ws that one would expect to be impressive both came at home against LSU (5-6) and Florida (5-6). Kentucky is a good team for sure, but their schedule doesn't really show that. And getting back to Georgia, the Bulldogs' final 7 games on this year's schedule: Auburn (6-5) on the road Kentucky (8-3) at home Florida (5-6) on the road Missouri (6-5) at home Tennesse (6-5) on the road Charleston Southern (4-6) at home Georgia Tech (3-8) on the road The biggest problem Georgia has is that their competition this season has been lacking across the board. Many people will refuse to believe that assessment simply because SEC. Cue the chant. But Georgia fans know the Bulldogs' schedule is their true and perhaps only weakness. Kirby Smart has been consistently great at recruiting, and under him Georgia has been loaded with talent like no other except for Alabama. And this leads to the the other burning question on the minds of many Bulldogs' fans (who keep this quiet, of course): can Kirby win the big games even with all this talent? The simple answer, no one knows. Maybe Georgia will win out as expected. If so, Kirby will deserve all of the accolades that will surely come his way. But if Georgia stumbles, what does that mean for Kirby? Will the national media begin to question him for squandering opportunities for rings with all of that talent? Will the media tag him the way they have tagged Harbaugh (can't beat Ohio State) so that every time Kirby's name comes up in almost any situation every talking head and national print person applies the hasn't won a championship even with all that talent tag? Come to think of it, nah, we know ESPN wouldn't do that. Because SEC.
