Semi OT- Melo's what's in your glass?

So I went ahead and subscribed to this. Really enjoyed the interviews. It's good fun. If only George Karl had such a passion for enjoying life and was so well liked by his NBA peers and former players...
This is what I know about Karl. He is a Carolina alum, winning NBA coach, lobbied for the Carolina job, and didn’t get a sniff.

Hes in his 70s they were looking for someone younger who could connect with college kids.

Yes, and his entire coaching experience was at the professional level.

George Karl has a huge ego that rubs a lot of his players the wrong way. This isn't new for him.

There are a number of fair criticisms of Melo, for sure, but to do so in this manner at this time is sad, honestly.

The NBA is and has been a star-driven league for success on the court and if you continuously allow your ego as a coach to get in the way of capitalizing on the potential of your star(s), that's always going to be a hindrance to success.

The guy can coach, but he's a bitter old man at this point.

What did he say?

Karl is an idiot. Had issues with Gary Payton, Ray Allen, as well as Melo.
Somehow he never figured out that the players, and especially the superstars, were the focus & not the head coach.
I think he was and still is, bitter and resentful. He’s practically a pariah in nba circles, but if you asked him, he’s never wrong…it’s everyone else.

Pretty much. I mean Melo shares why the move to LA was good for him and I don't recall the last time he even mentioned Karl and yet GK decides he needs to have himself a moment in the spotlight to belittle a former player. Also the passive aggressive crap is even more pathetic.

This is a throwback but Karl always wanted attention. He seemed feed off of conflict he could create while then also making sure to paint a passive aggressive narrative he is the good guy.

I'm surprised Karl has time to talk trash in between polishing all of his championship trophies.

Melo has had a nice career re-birth since landing in Portland. He's been in shape, he's accepted his role, he's still being productive and it seems like his teammates really like him.

For a first ballot HoFer to accept a bench role and do the work to stay in shape this late in his career is pretty impressive.

I think once he retires, Melo's career will be held in higher esteem than it is now. Melo has three issues, imo, that has kept him from being regarded as highly as he will be once the dust settles:

1) Initially coming in with LeBron and constantly being pitted against him. If Melo ends up in the 2002 or 2004 or 2005 draft, for example, I think he's viewed much differently from the get go.

2) Kevin Durant. KD basically came in and became arguably a top 3 small forward of all time and arguably the greatest scorer in the history of the league. Sort of knocked the wind out of Melo's sails.

3) No title. This one is tough for me, because he clearly could have been part of the Heatles if he wanted and prob got his chip. He didn't. He probably wanted to do his own thing. He structured his deal differently than Bron, Bosh and Wade when he did his first extension in terms of total years and when he could opt out.

One final note, I think Melo's biggest issue when he was younger was his focus on his own aggregate numbers. I know his D wasn't great, but a LOT of young guys' defense isn't great. And, guys that have to bear the load of scoring have a tough time to go both ways 100% of the time. Is that an excuse? Sort of. I'm not absolving Melo of his defense. But it seemed less like he didn't try versus him not being active within the defensive system.

Am I being biased? Maybe. But the guy helped bring back excitement for the NBA with Bron, et al. He wasn't scared to come to the NYK. He is a top 10 scorer of all time. And he's still playing in the 2021-22 with the only other guy playing from his class being LeBron, a top 3 player of all time.

I have no idea who he'd choose. But it would be pretty cool if JB got to be the guy that presented Melo for his HoF speech.

Good stuff. I always found it odd he was such a lightning rod for criticism. I mean the guy went to a small market team that has had some players but never really a consistent playoff team in the West and he made them relevant and that has carried over since he got there minus a few bumps in the road. He also was in the West which dominated the league for the better part of 2 decades. Maybe a little bias but to me the excess criticism was just weird.

It's funny seeing Nuggets fans bash him- the guy is literally a giant reason half of them have something to cheer for these days.

If he gets a ring this year and plays an important part- it will be funny how so many will finally accept him. It shouldn't be like that but ..
