During the NW game, it was obvious that we were having trouble avoiding big returns on kick offs.
As I understand it, the penalty for off sides on a kick off is 5 yards from the spot of the ball. (I could be wrong but I thought that is the penalty)
What would be the drawback for sending 4-5 guys deliberately offsides (a good 5 yards) to help force a fair catch?

I am not trying to bait an answer or being a goof here.
What would be the reason not to do it? 5 yards seems like a small price to pay.

I think you're mixing kickoffs and punts. Kickoff returns weren't a problem. Punt returns were. We can't send guys offsides on a punt return, it will be dead ball, false start, move the ball back 5 yards, and it's 4th down again.
