...Gross' choices to replace Greg Robinson, in that order, before being "overruled" by the search committee's insistence on Marrone. Where would this program be now had Gross had his way upon firing Robinson? I appreciate that opinions on Marrone are polarized, but say what you will, very few coaches could have restored the fundamentals of a program the way Marrone did in the wake of Robinson's ineptitude. I keep asking myself why I'm so discouraged by the last few weeks being a fan of this program, and have come to the conclusion that Gross in the role of "CEO" of this program scares the daylights out of me. By all accounts, Gross had no contingency plan in place to replace Marrone when he left, despite the writing being on the wall being clear, and hired Shafer as a result of having no other viable options vetted. I truly think Shafer is doing all he can, but all signs point to him just not being equipped to handle the reins. The recent press conference performance in particular comes to mind. The whole history of this thing leaves me feeling very uneasy about the future. I hope I am wrong.

I long ago gave up being a mind reader!!!! I just do not know what contingency plans he had if any. I think DG has done a good job at SU in many sports and football will be and is the hardest to sport to turn around.
I agree with Schafer's change in the offensive coordinator and play caller and no matter who the quarterback is and how the game goes I will not second guess from 150 miles away.

I'm not done with Shafer yet and still have faith but what if we tried going after a name like Josh Mcdaniels? I get he might not be interested but major professional experience, head coach experience, learned under Bellick, helped Tom Brady become who he is today and not to mention he is young so he has a bright future. I understand this is a reach but worth a shot as he is only an OC right now...

Hard to believe McDaniels is only 38...

How much was Dan Mullen in the mix at the time? He probably would have been grabbed away by another program but it sure is looking like he is going to be the hottest name in college football this offseason.

Exactly, I'm sure he would be able to connect with recruits well too, bring in a professional staff. He could definitely turn it around here. Quite the reach but worth a shot offer him the right type of money, we have upgraded facilities!

I think Mullen was discussed during the GRob hire, but not later on - could be wrong though.

And he was on the hot seat just last season.

Yeah things change so quickly. We were declaring Shafer the savior of the program 6 weeks ago...Mullen will probably have his choice between Florida, Mississippi State and LSU if Les Miles goes to Michigan.

From the Northeast. Was a WR coach at Wagner(!) in 1994/1995. Amazing what you can find out with the internet

He was in trouble after last year, he's having a 2012 year and the UF opening is his Buffalo.

I remember Mullen being mentioned but he didn't seem interested in coaching a northern school.

You should've read down another line or two in his bio to see that he was also a grad assistant at SU.

Wife-related, IIRC.

Mullen was nearly run out of town after last year, now he will be able to write his ticket and the same people who were trying to get him fired last year will be begging for him to stay in that rathole that is Starkville. Funny how that works.

Sounds familiar.

Yep, funny what happens when you recruit a talented QB

Are we really going to blame Gross for hires that he didn't make now that would have maybe gone poorly? That's some next level insanity.

"...would have maybe gone poorly?"...really? is there any legitimate doubt those hires would have failed here? You can defend the good doctor all you want--that's your prerogative--but evaluating his decision making process retroactively is a perfectly acceptable means of grading performance. Happens in every level of legitimate business.
