Slightly OT: Winningest D-1 coach of all time dies ...

Pat Summitt died today. Fascinating obit from NY Times. Talk about a coach who was tough on her players!

She was a great coach and one tough woman.
Edit: Nobody did more for any sport than she did for women's basketball. This story is amazing. It took someone like her to bring women's basketball to where it is now. Other schools have enjoyed great success because of what she was able to accomplish.

One of the best coaches of all time in any sport imo. Like the article said, she built the Tennessee program from nothing. She may have been tough on her players, but many seemed to have stayed pretty close to her after her playing days so I think they came to appreciate her.

Had the pleasure of meeting her back in the mid 90's. She sat next to my wife and I at this little bar and grill in Cleveland. Just a wonderful person. Her legacy will live on.

There would be no Geno or UConn dynasty without the bar Summit set. It takes greatness to inspire others to greatness.

Peyton Manning: "I wished I would have played for her. I think Pat Summitt could have coached men's basketball, men's football, she could have coached anything she wanted. She was that good of a coach."

Phil Fulmer: "Thanks, jerk."

64 years old is very young. Life is cruel sometimes. For some reason she always reminded me of Bear Bryant. Two tough and very successful coaches. RIP.

Forgive my ignorance, but I didn't realize that a person could die from Alzheimer's.

"Typically complications of Alzheimer's are heart attacks, thromboembolisms, strokes, kidney failure, and lung infections due to aspiration of food. Multi-organ failure is usually the cause of death in these patients."

It's a frightening disease that in my opinion doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. So do not apologize for your ignorance. You are not the only one.

I have witnessed what it can do. It's incredibly harsh. There needs to be more dedicated research. It is happening and they are learning more. Encouraging but not enough.

God bless, Coach Summitt. A true teacher, hero, and legend.

I thought I knew a lot about Pat Summit but I guess I didn't, because she was only 64 when she died, 59 when she stepped down as the head coach of Tennessee and started as its head coach in 1974 at the age of 22. Astounding, until you recall how totally irrelevant women's sports were back then, except for tennis and gymnastics and figure skating. Track and field maybe. Any sport I left out?

FWIW, I thought Pat Summit was in her mid 70s and just looked great for her age.

Incredible woman. Ahead of her time. Many similarities to our own JB, so I think lots of orange fans would appreciate her greatness. RIP, and condolences to her family.
