Smoked on Tobacco Road

True, unless the ACC is reborn but by some miracle remains a power conference with new teams. From day one it was obvious that we would have no gravitas in the ACC. We were The Beast of the East, a selector school. Each game was a backyard brawl. Syracuse Georgetown was the biggest rivalry in the country. We gambled on the ACC to save the football team and increase cash flow. To me, as a basketball fan, it was not worth it.

The old Big East is never coming back. Not worth even bringing it up.

If we were truly the Beast of the East we would have TAKEN some gravitas in the ACC. Boeheim didn't have to, for all intents and purposes, retire on the job shortly after going to the ACC. If he either kept working his tail off a few more years or turned it over a few years sooner, maybe we would have established ourselves as a powerhouse in the ACC and carved out a spot for ourselves with Duke and UNC. Money talks and if we were winning big games and bringing in the money that goes with it, fostering rivalries that made the conference money, etc, then we would be getting treated better today.

We’ve played 3 games in North Carolina so far this year and have lost by a combined score of 288 to 203. Yikes. Doesn’t look good for when we play NC State.
Huge break with the new football schedule to play all of them as little as possible.

Season ended at BC just hope we scrape .500 in the league. My order of guys to portal is probably different than most so whatever.

And by the way, there's no reason we can't do that in the future. This is college sports, which is to say that all that matters is the bottom line financially. Be worth more to the conference financially than the Wake Forests and NC States and Clemsons, and we'll get treated better. UNC and Duke, well, tough to be worth more than them to the ACC. But for a rivalry to be valuable, you have to win some games, so if we get ourselves to that level again, we'd at least be likely to get a fair shake on our home floor.

I don’t understand how we are equating getting blasted against 3 NC teams with we are “not being treated well.” If we were this bad when facing all those great Big East teams of old, we’d be getting “treated” just as bad or worse. The issue is that we aren’t a very good team, not what conference we’re in or how we are perceived in that conference.

I think we’re just not relevant.

We had one of the Nation's most successful programs. We landed 4 and 5 star recruits. Boeheim did not stop recruiting or wanting to win. The best recruits stopped coming. It was predictable and many of us said so. If a player wants to play in the south why choose a NE school?

He gave zero effort at the end. Dasher just said this last night.

If JB thought that he lost his competitive fire he would have quit. Competition is who he is. Sometimes it's hard to admit that we were jilted by those we pursued.

As to football, our recruits are 100% better but still at the bottom of the ACC. No superstars. Not enough to be competitive with Clemson or FSU, but enough to make me happy.

Times have changed. NIL money tops everything else. With more wins more NIL money will flow. This is our big chance.

Calipari would go see guys and he would send Red or GMac. He was fine with a losing season because he got to coach his kids while we lost Quincy and others. That’s not giving full effort.

I heard this excuse about football for over 20 years and believed it, I was dooped the entire time, if they can recruit football a basketball coach shouldn’t have a problem getting a few core guys.

JB thought he was smarter than the coach on the other bench - and usually was, and could win with what they had.

There are way too many stories of us taking passes on kids, etc over the last several seasons.

You really believed it?

Time to lay off the alternative intoxicants.

There are two issues: Relevance and Recruiting

Syracuse has never been a good cultural fit in the south and never will be.
The Orange simply don't belong on the ACC...even if the days of geographically appropriate conference are supposedly over.

Winning makes you relevant.
But that hasn't been the case since the first season in the ACC.
So, yes, Syracuse is not relevant in the ACC and has lost much of the major relevance it had in the Northeast.

Recruiting: Kids general go to the schools where they think they have the best chance to improve their game, fit in with the program and make some money.

Can't blame the new coach for the team he has.
OK, maybe he botched the transfer portal center play.
But he lost two key players, another is injured and a third hasn't shown much of what was expected.

But play exciting basketball and you'll get recruits.
That, it seems, Red Autry is trying to do.

Meanwhile we're left with the often criticized Judah Mintz.
The bottom line is without him the Orange wouldn't win 10 d-amn games.

I don’t understand what you mean by Syracuse wont ever be a cultural fit in the south etc. ok cool. Who cares. If we recruited and played like we did in the 80s/90s/00s then it would be irrelevant. We would’ve killed it in the acc then. Our issue is the last 10 yrs of declining boeheim ball and pathetic recruiting. We are here because he stayed too long period. Now it’s time to make it better by recruiting more talent and so far Red is on that path. Hopefully he hits the portal and has the talk with some of these kids.

It's not one or the other, though. It's both. Our decline would've been better hidden in the Big East.
