Had some close encounters with Joe in my former life as a sportswriter, including in a gym in Detroit when he was training for a fight (vs. Bob Foster) and riding around with him in a car in Akron, where I was working, when Joe was in town with his band, the Knockouts (great fighter ... singer, not so much). I've always been an Ali guy, but Joe, sweet man, great fighter, great rags-to-riches story.
