Since there has long been a market for good athletes, and the rules in college have prevented them from being legally paid - assuming a black market formed early and everywhere is probably a good assumption.  It’s definitely a good assumption for any school with teams that were actually good.

SMU had the misfortune of being in a major market in Dallas with lots of media, where most of the fans supported the bigger schools SMU competed against.  It was a perfect storm to get a hostile media to investigate them and take them down.  SMU might have been more brazen about it than other schools - but the first two, and much more important points - make me unwilling to commit to that.  Personally I think SMU got screwed 40 years ago, I’m glad they’ve rebuilt from the ashes, and I’ll be rooting for them in the ACC when they aren’t playing Syracuse.[/SIZE]
