(This is what I wrote to my Duke and Carolina friends this morning.) Now, THAT'S what I'm talking about! Getting the white stuff on the ground again. (It's been in the freaking forties the past 2 weeks.) A trek to the Dome with ear muffs and scarves, all bundled up. Trudging up and down slippery hills, head bowed against the wind blowing cruelly in your face. When you return, amazingly, the wind has switched and it's STILL in your face! Through the swirling snow, your destination suddenly looms in front of you: the white monster, the Carrier Dome! As the wind shrieks and pulls at your clothing, you stand in line to be wanded. Finally, FINALLY, you go through the revolving door and ahhhhh! Warmth and the beautiful dull gray of concrete. Only two more blocks to go as you head inevitably against the crowd all going a different way. Since it is 4:00, most of the crowd is drunk and desperately trying to buy four more beers before tip off. A sweet white-haired couple holding hands is suddenly pushed to the ground and trampled by those who want to get to their seats before the national anthem. They are true patriots. There is no hope for the seniors now, so you keep pushing forward. At last, up the steps, through the tunnel and the entire arena bursts open before your vision. The orange, the ORANGE, it hurts us, my precious! Eyes slowly adjust to the glare. You fist bump Bill, the usher, and then sit down in your orange seats, taking in the panorama of 30,000 people settling in, the cheer leaders, Otto the Orange, the players practicing on the floor, the band playing "The Final Countdown" and you know, as surely as you know anything that YOU ... ARE ... READY. Well, honestly, I didn't expect to write that, but there it was! It all comes from getting a good night's sleep.
