So Academics Dont Matter to Schools: Check this out from Colorado

that moved from the Big 12 to Pac 12. One of the strong reasons to go was academics and the research conducted by Pac 12 schools and Colorado. Faculty does matter as does academic standing. Interestingly, Colorado athletic department has a loan from the University to payoff its debt to the Big 12 for leaving.

The Pac 10's conference model was the most elegant and sensible of all, IMO. Neat, logical pairs of opponents, often the "U" and "State" flavors of schools. They had to bend the model a bit to expand, but Colorado/Utah make a plausible pairing. So for the next round of expansion, I expect that they'll back-fill to their original model, by bringing in BYU and the Colorado School of Mines.

Last I saw which was 2006-07 numbers, the Big Ten's CIC brought in $3.5 billion in federal funding, with the 11 members and the University of Chicago, that averages to just under $300 million per school, and that's only for one year.

If the Big Ten called, any academic institution in this country would be out of their minds to turn it down.

Through the university, which values both.
there is considerable more dollars in a university research consortium than in football...hundreds of millions of dollars or more...Nebraska was asked to leave the AAU because its research grants fell below $100,000,000/yr...a bit more than $20 million for TV contract.
