CB/S, DL ?

Probably hasn’t changed. We need help at Corner and Safety, but also need to get bigger at the spots. 5-9 160 doesn’t cut it. Our secondary is woefully undersized and it shows not only in 1v1 matchups but it's glaring when it comes to tackling. Size is improving, with Clarke 6-3 180, Foster 6-0 205, Carl Jones 6-1 180. Recruits; Coley 6-1 180, Melifonwu 6-2 180. But need more.

I’m still bullish on the OLine. Mostly inexperienced and a new system. We have some depth. Work in progress, but we always want to take good prospects on the line when we can. Add 2

DT/DE – Need a couple of each. These are spots that unfortunately it’s rare to have a young kids step in and impact. Takes a couple years to develop. Still need 2 more DEnds and 2 more Tackles imo. Keep hoping to hit a homerun.

We really need 25 kids this class to get the depth up, that’s 10 more as it stand now.

CB/S – 3

DE – 2

DL – 2

OL – 2

RB – 1

Offensively – obviously we want Reeves at TE and it looks like we want to take a TE, it’ll be interesting to see what unfolds here. I’m expecting a decommit or 2 at some point like Sherod. Hope for none but it happens.

Losing out on Pierre and Moore certainly hurt Clarke coming in injured also is a blow to the depth. Now losing Dowels and Cordy to the defensive backfield will create a baptism of fire for Jones. I think Bradshaw might need to move back. The numbers are thin at DB.

Overall talent upgrade on defense.

- Size at LB
- Size in CB/DB
- Pass rush specialist at DE
- Blue chip interior OL
- Every down RB that can go between the tackles

Just a reminder of who we have at the moment...

Looks like they’ve made a move to upgrade the LB size.

(assuming the listed sizes are accurate)

2016
Andrew Armstrong 6-2 217
Tim Walton 6-2 224

2017
Nadarius Fagan 6-2 200
Tyrell Richards 6-3 216
Kadeem Trotter 6-2 205

Even if we deduct an inch they’re all still over 6-0 tall. That’s a start. Of any LB Shafer brought in I’d guess Taylor and Thomas are the only ones over 6-0 tall.

We need a general overall upgrade in talent.

It all comes back to our horrible classes of 2012, 2013, and 2014. Looking back on them should see the bulk of our starters, but it's a lot of nothing. 2014 is proving to be the best of those three classes, but still a ton of misses.

i dont wont to go through all the disclaimers, so without diving inside the numbers, we can take 25, which means we have 10 spots to fill as it stands right now.

So you get 10 choices, what positions are you filling.

TE - 1 and if not OL - 1

this is true. People have alluded to every coach "leaving the cupboard bare" but in this case it's head scratching. Marrone came in and purged half the team, so that was on him. But the transition into Shafer was weak and then Shafer's classes were weak. This team should be an a upper class laden team but it isn't. it's dominated by true sophomores and true juniors. there's no depth and few redshirted kids.

Offensively we're fine. It's the defense that is shocking. And this was a Shafer team. What were they doing and what was their future plan? Holy cow.

Dino purged some kids to. He booted Sheppard, Ealey and Carter all from the DL which hurts but seems like it was necessary. Ty Cross has been jumped by a true frosh on the DL so he may never see the field. It's shocking to how small the linebackers are that Shafer recruited.

DE 1
DT 1
OL 1 [preferably a tackle]
TE 1
RB 1 [if the right one arrives]
CB 3 [with one being a JUCO or a 5th year transfer who can challenge to start immediately]
S 1 [with one being a JUCo or a 5th year transfer who can challenge to start immediately]
1 extra for a "slips through the cracks" guy that Babers and staff can get it on late

Positions I think we're "set" at currently:
QB
WR

Would not be surprised for them to go after a JUCO in some capacity, and to pursue the fifth year transfer market HARD. Would love to see them add a pass rushing specialist who can play immediately, or a RT who could make the OL pop next year.

I think some of the second year frosh [especially on the OL] are going to prove to be upgrades from the incumbents this year, especially at C and RG / RT. We need those guys to pan out.

I'm not sure where Coley or the MA kid -- who both have terrific size measurable for what we need in the secondary -- project at Corner or Safety. That could impact the breakdown.

The kids in this class currently are a nice start. Getting Tyran Hunt from VA at OT and Reeves at TE would be sweet (though the tea leaves on Reeves seems to be facing the wrong direction).

A lot of the problem goes back to the 2012 and 2013 classes. Too many JUCOs, kids that didn't make it, kids that transferred out, kids that were medically disqualified and kids that were kicked off the team. Those were Marrones recruiting classes. It takes time to build depth back up.

And with Cross... some kids just don't make the move from HS to D1.

With all the attrition at DB, I wonder if they're considering using Armstrong at safety. It was his position in HS and it might force some opposition WRs to think twice before going over the middle.

I'm actually surprised that the staff is using him on special teams...I think this kid could end up being one of the best players from last year's class.

He played there Fri night for a couple of series. I'm not sure what package it was.

Really? I haven't noticed him other than on specials.

Yeah - I don't even remember what Q is was. But his size was noticeable back there. Looked like he was playing center field.

Edit: and I think it was a couple of plays, not series.

I do remember seeing him out a few times and it did seem to be in the center of the field, I want to say 3rd quarter.

If he gets a chance to play safety... given time, he might actually be an upgrade.
