So far, so good, kind of. SU came out like a buzz saw, aided by a couple of penalties on Duke’s All-American face-off guy: they coach said he’d never been called for anything all year. Sometimes you get some refs in the post-season that see things differently. The Orange built up a 5-0 lead and then answered Duke’s first goal to make it 6-1.But Cornell was up 5-2 and Duke scored 12 of the next 13. Against SU they closed the half with 4 goals in a row, so we’ll see who has the momentum in the second half.

And momentum seems to have so much to do with lacrosse. One goal seems to lead to another and another. It’s almost like the press in basketball where you make a basket so you can set up the press and get the ball and make another basket. Then you miss, can’t get the rebound and the streak ends. But there’s nothing like that in lacrosse. Yet the runs seem almost the same.

Cornell fell behind 6-14 and scored the next seven in a row. That’s the kind of turn-around SU needs about now. They might have stopped Duke’s momentum but wasted a possession when seemed to have an open lane to the goal on a fast break but passed it. He then ran to the front of the goal and was unguarded except for the goalie who turned and intercepted the return pass to him. Duke went down and scored goal #5. It seemed like a big moment. We’ll see if it was.
