So proud to have Scott Shafer as our head coach

I was talking to my Father last night who is doing much better and had a chance to go to the Syracuse game with some of our friends and family. He was saying that Shafer is genuine in his appreciation of the opportunity and that he is truly a people person. Doug was what the program needed after Grob. A no BS guy who really knows talent and the game and had the personality to fix this program and provide the foundation that Scott has taken over. I feel as if the combination of Doug followed by Shafer is perfect. Im not sure that Shafer could have done what Doug did but i also feel that given the foundation that Doug left Shafer is actually a better fit to take it to the next level. I hope that Doc has the forsight to realize that Shafer is such a good fit for our progam and community. I believe that we would be hard pressed to find a better coach and hope that he is here for a very long time. The article is a great insight into what is important to Shafer and i hope that all on this board have a chance to read it. Proud to have him as our coach.

enjoy your time with Dad I know I did, but at times I wish I could have done more.

Simple business cycle.

Managers are built for certain phases of an organization's growth. There are effective managers who do great in the start-up phase, others that thrive in the growth phase and so on.

Marrone's approach was needed to change a culture and set a structure. He was a low-risk guy who instilled an approach that is needed to build an atmosphere conducive to winning. By nature, Marrone is not going to take many chances - many here questioned a lot of his play calling, etc. But SU's football program couldn't afford to take many chances - which is why he was exactly the guy for the job.

As kcsu said, Shafer was a great hire for this time and the foundation is in place. He has the ability to take chances that the program couldn't before, and has the temperament to do so.

I'm not sure Darryl Gross understands this type of thing - I honestly believe he sort of fell into this by blind luck. But sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. So kudos to him for making the correct choices after a miserable one in GRob.

Great analogy on the business side. I have been fortunate to build a few business from inception to large companies. I enjoy the start up phase and the point that a company gets fairly large. The middle growth portion is not my strength and i have been blessed to have some great managers who are much better at that phase. Doug was a great start up coach and would make a very good corporate turn around guy.

Scott is a growth manager. I also believe that he has the personality to attract and retain coaches beyond simply paying them more. As to Doc dont under estimate him. I believe he is an exceptional AD with great vision. He knew what he has in Scott and i doubt that there was any hesitation in his choice.

...and I think that choice was made significantly easier when the players unanimously lobbied for HCSS.

SU and this community is lucky to have him leading our program. I think he is poised to accomplish great things here.

I largely agree with your post but there are other things to consider as well.
  1. TGD has a good record hiring coaches and the GRob choice, while so unfortunate, was not exactly a turrible one on the surface. Hard to know how a coordinator will handle HC responsibilities. Alos, it is unfari to not give him credit for the ones he got right. There were many that wanted Hackett or someone else.
  2. Not knocking DM but it is sometimes easier to fix a program that is broken and way down than it might be to continue a program that simply lost its coach to another job.
  3. Shafer IMO does not get as much credit as he deserves for the part he played in turning around the program. It is simply a fact that the defense improved much more than the offense or ST ever did. Without the job Shafer did DM would almost certainly have had a losing record. Granted that DM hires Shafer and I give him credit for it but that does not lessen the contribution that Shafer made.
  4. Shafer has been just as much, if not more, conservative in play calling than Doug. Until we put a high powered scoring offense on the filed that is the way it will be - they have no other choice.
I think Shafer will take us to the next level because he is a very smart coach, is learning the HC job very quickly and is creating a culture to which he can recruit. He is a good man and is going to be a very good college HC.
Go Shaf!

I agree with all of this except the conservative play calling part. HCSS wasn't afraid to take a few chances on 4th down and I liked his fake punt/FG attempts.

Two notables that have stood out to me about Shafer

1. It is much harder to show your teenagers the path to becoming wonderful young men than it is to simply tell them. I think HCSS does an amazing job of both.

2. If Shafer continues on the path many are starting visualize, I am intrigued by the couple times I have heard him refer to what JB has built here. How it wouldnt be other than for JB and how special it is that he built it. It may be a pipe dream but if he sees JB as a blueprint I dont know what else we could possibly hope for.

I thought someone would bring that up and it is a fair enough comment. Both dealt with under performing offenses. However, SS had a questionable FG kicker in whom he had no confidence and the other trick play was desperation. The fourth down calls were also related to the lack of a FG kicker. So, I grant you slight differences but only slight.

DM took more chances in 2012 with Nassib. I'll bet HCSS takes more chances next year as well.

I guess the bottom line might be that while they have far different personalities, they are quite similar thinkers about football.
