Fall Softball Update
Coaches are pleased with the team following its first weekend of fall ball action
9/16/2014 11:02:00 AM
Over the course of two days, the Orange competed against four New York opponents in its first weekend of fall softball play. After outscoring Fordham, Albany, St. Bonaventure and Herkimer this weekend in Binghamton the coaches are pleased with their team and are excited for the road ahead.

"It's great to have the opportunity to get on the field during the fall and see what this year's team looks like," Coach Ross said. "I was impressed with all parts of our game this weekend. Our team was very disciplined at the plate and we were playing with a lot of confidence defensively. From a coaches perspective, seeing them play like that in their first time out on the diamond against an opponent... It was great to see."

"We were very pleased with the effort and level of play that we saw out of our team this past weekend ... Offensively we saw consistent quality at bats and defensively our pitching staff showed signs of dominance," Coach Bosch added.

The freshmen earned themselves quality playing time and by all accounts, they made the most of it. Coach Ross and her staff made a point to express that this year's freshman class played "extremely well".

"I think I was most pleased with how well our freshmen have adjusted to the college game. They have stepped in and are contributing right away which isn't always an easy thing to do. So it's very comforting to know that these girls are ready to come in, play at a high level and help this program get to where we want to be," Coach Ross said.

This weekend Syracuse hosts Binghamton on Saturday, September 20 at 2:00 PM and LeMoyne Sunday, September 21 at 1:00 PM.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -
On Saturday afternoon Syracuse softball continued as the Orange hosted Binghamton at the Skytop Softball Stadium. SU's offensive showing left hitting coach, Matt Nandin very pleased with his team as they scored 23 runs in the contest.

"I thought all of our hitters did a really good job getting in hitters counts and not missing their pitches when they got them." Coach Nandin said.

He was very pleased that even when the 'Cuse was pouring on runs, his hitters remained disciplined and were not swinging for the fences.

"We scored 23 runs and only had two home runs (both by Julie Wambold) which says a lot," Coach Nandin said, "It's really easy for the hitters to lose their approach when we get out to a big lead and then they just try to hit homeruns."

Sunday's game against LeMoyne was cancelled due to weather and has been moved to Friday, September 26 at Skytop Softball Stadium at 4:00 PM. This weekend the Orange will also visit Cornell for a double header on Saturday, September 27 at 12:00 PM.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Over the weekend the SU softball squad wrapped up its fall schedule with strong showings against Le Moyne on Friday and Cornell on Saturday. The core of the Syracuse lineup came alive against Le Moyne and it was the pitching and defense that held Cornell at bay.

"Friday we played well in all aspects of the game. Offensively we were led by Sydney O'Hara, Corinne Ozanne and Julie Wambold who combined finished 7-9 with eight runs batted in. We are counting on them to bat in the middle of our lineup with that type of production in the spring," said Coach Nandin.

"Saturday's games were carried by our pitching and defense but I'm happy that was the case. It was a good experience for the team to play in some tight games and learn to manufacture runs in pressure situations."

With the strong finish in the fall schedule, Coach Bosch and the team is looking forward to making the adjustments needed to be ready for the 2015 opener.

"It was a great way for our team to finish out the fall," said Coach Bosch. "Defensively our pitchers did a great job of controlling the game and the players behind them made some tremendous plays. Overall we have depth in the circle and we can now look forward to making ourselves better with our eye on the season opener."
