The Challenge of Grad School - Something no one has mentioned is that Geno is enrolled as a graduate student and he has to take graduate level courses. While not Harvard, SU  is a better school academically than South Florida and graduate level courses are taught at 2x undergraduate level speed with higher expectations on the quality of work.

Tougher Competition for PT than Anticipated - Battle and the 2017-18 version of Howard represent a bigger challenge than he expected for PT. So instead of a starting spot (He may have imagined), he's spelling the starters when they get tired or screw up.

Battling an Injury - He may have sensed himself falling further and further behind and he just wasn't getting better.

Boeheim's Expectations - JB is a very demanding coach to play for.

South Florida vs. CNY - Cold, gray, different styles (especially hair styles)

You put these all together and I can see Geno deciding to bag it. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it just didn't work out.
