A guy just called into the Manchild show saying that the reason Doug Marrone left SU was that he'd gone to the chancellor and asked if he could raise $4 million just for the football program. They told him to go ahead. He did and was then told that university policy said that 75% of any money raised would have to go into the general scholarship fund.

Does anybody have any inside info on this?

I have never heard that story. There is no doubt, however, that Coach Marrone was frustrated with the funding of the program.

He felt that if the funding level were in the middle of the pack, he could win championships.

So What? That was then and this is now.

That fundamentally makes no sense.

That makes no logical sense. First off why would Marrone go to the Chancellor and/or need approval from the Chancellor? Second if you designate funds for a specific cause, SU cannot reassign the funds elsewhere. For instance if you give $1000 to SU FB, SU cannot give it to SU Field Hockey even with Title IX.

Guessing he wanted to have SU-employed fundraising people to lead the charge?

That guy posted the same story to the Orange Nation chat and than also called in with it.

That's like saying 75% of the donations to the Melo Center went back to the general fund.

75% going to general scholarships sounds absurd, but I do know that there are athletic department fundraising policies that establish that a certain percentage of every gift designated for athletics (even ones designated to a specific sport) go into the general athletics fund. That may be something you see more at smaller schools though. Here's an example that I could actually find in writing from Haverford College in Pennsylvania:

80/20 for current operations fundraising- 80% of individual donations will be directed to the designated team and/or specific goal(s) the donor intends to support as articulated in the Haverford Athletic Plan and 20% will be directed to support the general athletic fund.

My cousin was friends with Doug's wife. I think their kids attended the same school. According to my cousin, SU promised Coach M certain things regarding facilities and then reneged.

I know he tried desperately to get an IPF built during this time here. SU declined making it a high priority for fund raising. He responded by trying to raise the funds himself. This is all definitely true.

I would not be surprised if the details here are true but I don’t know it for a fact.

Ironically, funding for the IPF was approved shortly after Doug left. I think it was the shock of losing him that finally convinced SU to move forward. Unfortunate.

It is a shame JW wasn’t the AD when Doug was here. He would have been a far better ally getting funds from the university. I bet he is impressed as hell at what John has been able to do since he took over as the SU AD.

This could technically happen. Here is how. A donor could say I’m giving you $4M for football. The university now has an obligation to spend at least $4M on the football program. But if they are putting in $20M of their own funds, they could spend the donor’s $4M and reduce their own contribution to $16M. But the football program never got an incremental dollar.
