Seriously, it was a great hit, he did the right things that you teach and these guys call it? Christ, the announcers in the Giants game were complaining about the hit on Cruz and he didn't even touch the ball. I don't get it because it's the second time (KState game) when SU has been called for it and I have yet to see it called for SU, is it my fan hat or am I seeing something that isn't there?

Great tackle Mr. Lynn and continue doing that.

I think it was because he left his feet in making the tackle high.

Unfortunately that call is a byproduct of concussions. It was a clean hit, done the right way that could have had a very positive impact for Cuse adding some excitement to the D. However, referees care less about the form of the tackle and more about the impact. big impact must throw flag. Any ref would prefer to be chastised for calling too safe a game than not safe enough. sucks too, because when I played football a hit like that would have been celbrated.

It wasn't a penalty.

Yes, awful call. In one of more poorly called games in the history of the conference, that one might have been the worst.

Refs that can't tell the difference between a clean hard hit and a blow to the helmet, or whatever it was that the ref thought he saw (I have no idea), need to be re-assigned to the lingerie league.

They should start throwing flags on QB's for leading WR's into hits like that.

It was a clean hit, shoulder to shoulder (just like Phil Thomas'), which is textbook to how you teach it.

It shouldn't have been a penalty, but I would still prefer to see a guy attempt to wrap up and run through someone, instead of do the cross arms over chest and launch thing.

Shouldn't have been a penalty.. He hit with his shoulder below the shoulders of the WR and the WR had caught the ball. Clean hit.

Btw.. anyone know how many 15 yarders were called in that game? Had to be north of 5 against us.

I missed that particular play. Is it true they called Charging? If so, great, because I miss, and I fear I will have to continue to miss, hockey this year. More charging and tripping calls are welcome. If possible, work in some slashing, icing and boarding.

launching is a dumb term. if someone is coming full speed at you standing ground just means you get run over.. players launch all the time and it never gets called unless you lead with the helmet or hit someone in the head.

Yes. They called the penalty Charging.

Didn't he launch?

Isn't that illegal?

Shouldnt be unless you lead with your helmet, which he did not.

The other side is it becomes dangerous for the defender at some point as well. If you only go half speed you have a much higher chance of getting hurt yourself. If you stay on the ground, with cleats planted, someones legs are probably going to give out maybe taking an acl, mcl, etc along with it.

After watching that call, and the transformation of the game over the past few years, i think its time to just make the offensive skill position players wear flags... and skirts.

I can't wait to see an RB get called for "charging" when they go airborn at the goal line.

I admit that don't know the rules all that well, but I was under the impression that when a defensive player throws his body in the air at the opponent - launches himself - that is a penalty.

There is nothing wrong with running on the ground and hitting the offensive player who is running toward you, but I thought that it was illegal to launch one's body in the air at an opponent - especially one who is in a defenseless position - I thought that that was the basis for the call.

I didn't think he launched at all.

Gee, the announcers on TV commented on it and that's what I saw - Lynn left his feet and targeted into the Bearcats receiver - with his shoulder that is.

I didn't think that part of the play was in dispute at all.

Targeting was the call. Made no sense.

I was there and the ref on the field called 15-yards PF Charging. It was repeated by Cinci fans behind be. "CHARGING???" I have no idea what was said on TV, and I don't think it is even a rule, but that is what the guy said.

Really? So every time a linebacker flies of the pile at a RB it should be a penalty?

It was a clean shoulder to shoulder hit and had no business being a flag.

Yes!

Odd (bad) penalty call, but Syracuse is a team full of guys who don't want to wrap up on tackles. That trait lost us a game on Saturday.

Then you heard it wrong. The call is Targeting. It's been in the book for a few seasons now. And anytime the refs see anything close to a helmet-to-helmet or even shoulder-to-helmet hit of a defenseless receiver it's going to be flagged. That is today's football. This isn't even the play to get angry about as I don't think it made a huge difference in the outcome of the drive (we were going to give up points anyway), we should be directing our ire at the field and replay officials over the first quarter fumble as that was the only real miscarriage of justice in the game.

It was Targetting. Just watched again. One in the same anyway.

Yes, it was called targeting.

It was a bad call when viewed in slow motion, but it's tough to argue that it did not look like contact was made to the neck or head when viewed at full speed. Heck, three separate flags were thrown instantaneously.

These plays (targeting, contact to head, horse collars) should be reviewed or at least challengable by the coaches.

The contact does not have to be head to head. The rule is that you can't lead with your elbow, shoulder, or helmet and strike the opponent's neck or helmet, assuming the opponent is deemed "defenseless".

I don't know what you're referring to with LBs - I don't understand the situation your post describes.

And I don't presume to discuss what should or should not be a penalty.

All I've said is that I think that launching at a defenseless WR is a penalty.

I may be wrong about that - I don't claim to be a rules guy.
