Give him a break. Gets such a bad rap. Guy bleeds college hoops and gives his life to stopping cancer

Hmm. Seems a bit extreme. Maybe instead you could just change the channel, press mute, or lower the volume? :noidea:

I hope Dick Vitale lives to be 1000 years old calling games. Heck of an ending and shoutout to Stu Scott.
As much as people love to rag on him, when he's at your school for a game, you KNOW it's a big game. Just re-watched the SU-Duke game at the Dome from last year, and he made the game a joy to watch. All about the players, the atmosphere, and how great college hoops is. He's not my favorite announcer, but I know it means something when he's in attendance.

Love em, Always have, Always will.

When he is on the call of a game. Just feels special.

Hate how he is being phased out would seem.

Most important person in college basketball history bar none.
That may be stretching things juuuuuust a little bit, but I do admit that even though I've never been a fan, anytime he came to the Dome when I was at SU, it felt like a much, much bigger game. The buzz around those games was almost palpable.

I liked your post except for the part "heck of an ending." It was, but the wrong way. I wanted Louisville to win for sure.

I can't think of a single person who contributed more to the current popularity of college hoops than him. He has been the face of the sport for the past 25 years.

Settle down, champ! No shooting people here!

Dukie V is old and tired...both literally and figuratively.
Can't stand his overwrought schtick and dread watching games when he's on.
Yes, he's done alot for the game, has been a great ambassador, is passionate, etc etc.
But he should be put out to pasture, and I'm glad they're phasing him out. JMHO

Reading the title of the post I thought you meant Cheney!
Good one... LOL...

Yes, Vitale has done a lot for college ball, but his best days are beyond him... I can't take away from his crusade against cancer, and he's given a lot to the fight... just can not stand the "look at me" shtick, I guess...

Dicky V was the guy who's enthusiasm for the game coupled with emergence of ESPN brought about an explosion of popularity in College Basketball. He was there when JB was just getting his coaching career under way and was the voice most recognized while extolling the virtues of the Big East as it emerged as the premier conference in college basketball. His career parallels many of the coaching greats who we now see approaching the end of their prolific coaching careers. That includes Jimmy B, Rick Pitino, and Dicky was around back when people like Carneseca, Rollie Massimino, and John Thompson were jumping up and down on the sidelines of the court back when college basketball had kids who stayed 4 years and teams could put up close to 100 points in 40 minutes.

People badgered Howard Cosell in much the same way. It doesn't always have to be that we have to have someone pass away before we can recognize greatness, regardless of our own personal preferences and bias. Dick Vitale is a giant in the game of College Basketball and I respect the man for what he has done with what he was given. Regardless of the bravado and volume with which he speaks he is a man of deep humility and generally is always providing positive things in the best interest of the players, coaches, schools, and the game of college hoops. He isn't perfect nor does he purport to be but there can be no mistake as to his heart always being in the right place and for his deep love of the game.

Cosell, the polar opposite of Vitale, had no one who liked him. Cosell thought he great at everything- he was great at boxing and was passable on MNF but he was mean and ornery. I would be shocked if I I heard that Dickie V did anything beyond reproach. Hope he announces as long as as he would like.

He's probably called an awful lot of UVA losses over the years, since he probably only does your games when you're playing(and usually losing to) UNC and Duke. So no wonder you don't like him.

Louisville beats us. UNC doesn't. Go Heels!

He has received my mute button treatment for years.

Wait, Dickie V made that game a joy to watch? That game was one of the greatest regular season college hoops games of all time. It was such a great game that it couldn't be ruined by Dickie V's shtick. He was openly rooting for Duke in the overtime. Zero objective analysis on Rak's block.
