Vitale is 90%+ schtick and less than 10% actual information.

What he and Cosell have in common is their annoying identification of good, but slightly under-publicized players and identifying them as their guys --- as if they discovered them. Remember Dick's Diaper Dandy list.

Cosell was largely schtick also, although his deal was trying to make football into more than it actually was. He was a charlatan and a fool with a hugely inflated view of himself.

So as a color guy, Vitale is virtually useless. But as a carnival barker, he is part of the college game.
