NIL is creating another issue which inpacts the NFL, so it’ll be interesting to see where this goes. Offenses in the NFL are mostly awful now - and a lot of that is due to poor QB play. Part of what is causing that is the development of QBs in college is awful. Due to the wider hash marks and ability of offensive linemen to go three yards downfield on passes (except if you’re Syracuse playing against Clemson) in college, it’s an RPO and horizontal passing game. Then QBs get to the NFL where that doesn’t work (NFL defenses have figured out RPO offense) - and they basically have to relearn the game. NIL makes this worse, because college is now even more “win now” mentality than the NFL due to portal rules. Coaches aren’t going to work on developing broader skills in their QB that might take time to see results - most will just simplify their playcalling and lean into horizontal passing and RPO. My guess is that the NFL will start putting pressure on college to change the hash marks and change the rule for linemen downfield on passes to match the NFL. The NFL badly needs better QBs coming out of college, the trends are all going in the wrong direction for that…pushing for rules changes is a way for the NFL to force college to help fix the problem. If we see those rules changes in the next five years - the impact of NIL will have contributed to its necessity.
