Somewhat OT - Martellus Bennett

No hate at all, Marcellus was a fine TE. But the reason he may have become a mercenary and not found a permanent home was because of his approach.

I think that 75% of pro athletes could care less about winning titles etc unless there is more $$ in it for them. Too many fans watching Scott Shafer speeches and remember the Titans. These guys are pros, they want to play well individually and make their $ to support their families but I bet around mid December many just want the season over

He’s a very intelligent guy who actually understands the business he was in.

I loved him the year he played for the Pats. Funny as hell, great player, did tons for the community and kids.

I don’t get you calling him a jerk. There are a few hundred NFL players and team officials I’d call jerks long before I called Marty Bennett that.

Bennett is a self absorbed idiot. Both of them.

It’s a quote to illustrate a point, not an indictment on his character. If I wanted to call him a jerk, I’d call him a jerk, which I didn’t.

Understanding the business or not, my point remains that his philosophy is at least in part why he never felt, or was included long term, as part of a team.

Funny, you loved him the year he played for the Pats, why didn’t they? It's not because he couldn't play football.

I absolutely think there's validity to your post, but, I don't agree on 75%. I do think whatever the number is, is growing though.

Everyone says the younger generation is more selfish, I'd argue that they're more educated (as it pertains to professional sports). Why wouldn't you check out on a poor team? Does that team have the same loyalty to you in Week 17, when you snap your tibia/fibia, in a meaningless game?

The leagues themselves created the problem, mostly with the onset of free agency. Just bc players understand that their profession is a meat market will create division.

I think what's interesting is the difference in philosophy from those making the decisions to those who are supposed to follow those decisions. The debate between young and old is as old as time itself. The access to, and amount of, information available has never been greater though.

At the end of the day, what's more important? If it's money and security, then protect yourself. If it's relationships, loyalty and fulfillment, sometimes sacrifices will have to be made.

He was hurt at the end of his run and they had Gronk? I mean they saw a situation where they got him cheap and he could put up numbers to get him to his next deal.

Bennett is an example of a guy who realizes that the NFL is a temporary career not something that will carry you for rest of your life

You’re debating a point that nobody disagrees on, I know what the nfl is. But it happened everywhere he went. He was a mercenary bc he wanted to be one, it’s not that difficult, that’s literally the point that the original quote was illustrating.

If he was used once, shame on that team. If he was used his whole career, by his own admittance, it’s bc that’s how he sold himself.
