Conference USA's board of directors will meet later this week to discuss the possibility of a full-scale merger with the Mountain West Conference, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
The prospect of a merger was already on the meeting agenda, even before C-USA member Memphis was on the verge of joining the Big East, the source said.
Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky confirmed Wednesday in a statement that Memphis plans to join the Big East for all sports in 2013.

Great news. It makes sense in 2012 for SU and Pitt to go to the ACC, the new teams to join the BE, and this new league to start operations. It would seem to me like there is no longer a reason why Boise, SD St, Houston, SMU, Memphis, and UCF could not join the BE for 2012. It is in everyone's best interests to just move forward. Which is why I am sure the BE will screw this up somehow.

This is happening after next year. So everything is on a timetable to be done for the 2013-2014 season. We'll still be in the BE next year.

this could effect the new beasts tv dollars-

might be a better buy?
so the beast gets less?

I think this is all about racing to be the first to get the remaining money on the table after the ACC, Big 12 and SEC get their contracts renegotiated after expanding.

I am afraid the Conference East/Mountain West is going to get expansion money first. Not good for the Big East, which again waited too long and has been checkmated.

"This is an exciting development that will stabilize the current conferences and create the first truly national conference with members in five time zones and television viewership from coast to coast," Smatresk said.

Time for Marinatto to extend an invitation to Chaminade to join the Big East in 2012 and beat Conference Mountain USA to the punch.

So, when does Pernetti get tarred and feathered? He was the leading proponent of turning down the offer, correct?
