Special Teams Preview (Post-Standard)

Curious if SU can now just wait and see how good kickers and punters are and offer scholarships once they've shown they can handle it in college instead of HS kickers getting scholarships?

So the portal has killed scholarship opportunities for lots of kickers and punters?

well if you dont bring in FR then there wont be anyone to portal pretty fast. this kid played 2 yrs as a walkon to get his shot., not everyone can play the waiting game.

I remember reading an article a long time ago, about Ray Guy, I think. And he talked about not just dropping the ball onto his foot, but actually throwing at his foot to crest more compression/force/energy on his kicks. I’m

Right but then no one will be getting scholarships until they portal.

SU seems to be a bit of an outlier in readily offering scholarships to kickers.

Agree. In following a few other programs fairly closely, it hasn't been unusual for the specialists to walk on and earn a scholarship with performance.

It’s been so long that I worried about our kicker, that I forgot I should worry about our kicker. Now I’m worried about our kicker.

Punting should improve, which is great, but placekicking? This could determine a winning/losing season.

Plus, replacing a very under appreciated longer snapper isn’t always the easiest thing in the world either.

Fingers crossed all around.

Just stop kicking!

Will there be another Special Teams Preview that makes any mention of the return teams?

Lowery (16) caught me eye. Listed at 6-4 239lbs now.
I think Lowery was 225 lbs on the 2022 roster but was updated to 239 lbs on the spring roster. That could be a nice development for him. We certainly have some LB's with some size.

Also the current 2023 Roster still is labeled as 2023 Spring Roster on Cuse.com.

Kind of surprised that there are two kickers on the roster and those kickers are:

- Brady Denaburg - really strong leg but his primary experience so far is as a kickoff specialist
- Ian Hawkins - redshirted last year; his freshman year - no kicks; just 28 punts for an average of 37 yards a pop.

Hoping that Denaburg's accuracy increases this summer.

Nah, let's just spend the whole article only focused on punting.

These position previews have sucked this year. Most are just superficial / scratch the surface analysis, some don't even rise to that level.

There is a new PWO kicker who committed this month who is apparently a class of 2023.
