Sports vs Academics: Are they related?

Are we as mostly sports fans before academia being realistic and forward thinking or are we just acting like a bunch of jocks? I honestly dont understand how the University doesnt see how intricate athletics and branding are to the academic side. How did Syracuse become NY's college team? It's not because a bunch of kids from Long Island go to college there. If they don't want to spend the money necessary and we backslide as an athletic program, watch the enrollment and donations go way, way down.

Duke and Vandy are both academic powerhouses to a degree that Syracuse would kill for. Both schools pump enough money into athletics, including football, to keep them respectable in a Power 5 conference. But let's not kid ourselves, Duke and Vandy are academic superstars and would be so even if they decided to emulate Chicago, Emory and Tufts and went the Division III route.
