St. John’s Lou Carnesecca is college basketball’s most priceless treasure

I remember seeing Louie coaching the Nets in a pre-season game somewhere in CNY. It had to be before the 1972-73 season, because Jim Chones was a rookie and getting a lot of hype. That was Louie's third and final year with the team, and he didn't seem to be enjoying himself. The Nets had Rick Barry the previous two years, but this team was pretty bad. At any rate, Louie would return to St. John's after this, where he was a whole lot happier and better suited, and the Nets would bring in Julius Erving the next season, and the rest is history.

One of my favorite memories of Louie occurred in Manley in the mid-1970's.

SU was bringing the ball up and Louie dashed out onto the court, moved his defenders around to where he wanted them, and scampered back off. The refs swallowed their whistle on it but at the same time it was funny.

I think it was SU St.Johns when SUs team chaplain Father B got tossed.
Loved those SU St Johns battles

Little did we know at the time, but looking back I think the Big East between 1984 and 1988 was the pinnacle of college basketball
And maybe another few years beyond.

Anyone who hasn't watched the documentary on the original Big East, needs to do so.
