Couple points I have seen made from those who have read the novelization of the movie, which includes a little more data: Finn was supposedly an elite storm trooper in his days with the first order. So he did have training with similar weapons and had much combat training. (How that synchs up with him being in "sanitation" I don't know).

Also Kylo Ren was seriously messed up during that fight and the subsequent fight with Rey. The Han Solo incident that had just transpired was supposed to supercharge his powers (from a dark side point of view, as in Vader's first assignment to go wipe out the younglings was intended to "power him up" - and it did work for him), but instead it had the exact opposite effect on Kylo, weakening him.

Additionally he had just taken a direct hit from Chewy's bow caster which they had spent substantial effort throughout the film making sure you knew that was a super powerful weapon.

All that said, I'm not really disagreeing with you because it does seem that he should have dispatched Finn and Rey with virtually zero effort. But it would be a short trilogy if that happened!
