State DOT releases plans for three new tunnel options that could replace elevated I-81

I guess we now know where the 200$ for the football stadium is going

A tunnel is the dumbest idea ever unless of course there will be a toll charge for using the tunnels. In which case people will avoid them and go around which would be counter to what they are trying to do.

It will eventually be boiled down based on cost to a boulevard or another Viaduct.

since this is all about blending in I think they should have people park at the north/south ends an board a bus through the city. it would be the Dome experience on a larger scale.. it would give people the chance to get off and enjoy the local business/restaurants and we could charge a quarter a ride to get the money back. Sure people would have to budget for a 2nd car but thats a cost pushed out from the taxpayers so it saves the state money on building a large road/tunnel.

if this mess costs 6 billion (double whatever they say up front), it would be cheaper to just write a 10,000 check to everyone in onondaga county with a note saying "Sorry 81 is ugly!"

It would be better if they just close 81 and bypass the city on 481. Then they should just close down the city too( local traffic only). I will find a different route for my more and more infrequent visits into the city of Syracuse.
Tunnels are a ridiculous, dangerous and expensive option, just stupid. Rule of thumb, you tunnel if you have no other option.
I guess they think what they can save on snow removal will compensates for all the additional costs. Tunnels must have ventilation fans(huge). Trucks carrying hazardous or flammable materials would have to be banned like trucks are on Onondaga parkway which I am sure will work just as well as it does there after all no trucks have ever hit that railroad bridge.
Who the heck came up with this idea?

It's all academic. The process is an unfortunate use of resources, but a tunnel will not be seriously considered.

I drove all through Buffalo for the tournament on elevated highways. We were in a hotel by the airport and found restaurants, First Niagara Centre etc very easy to access during the tournament.

They are never going to please everyone and with now with 16 crazy options, there will be even less consensus and more arguing.

I went to the meeting and volunteered to be a stakeholder. They plan to analyze each option to see what is most feasible from a community and cost point of view. Each option will be at least be a billion dollars, and probably run over that. 90 percent is coming from the federal highway fund. The rest from the state. By the end of the summer the analysis will be done, and the most feasible options will be presented to the public. At that point the state will choose based off public input and what would have the most positive impact to the community. I've attended numerous meetings, and have asked if the university has had any input into future I-81 plans, and they have yet to be brought to the table. If the university, with the state does at some point agree to build a new stadium somewhere along the 81 or 690 corridor, SU and the state DOT will then have to share their plans. Also, while people are focused on the viaduct portion, the elevated section of 690 will have to be replaced, or rehabilitated as well.

Go with the East Alignment option - lots of spending in the local economy - lots of jobs and a great underground route that opens up downtown for commercial and residential development.

Go Big!!!

There would be no exit off 81 onto a city street from the mall and ball park until the 481 interchange.

I agree...then build a nice boulevard between downtown and the university. You could keep I-81 operational until the tunnel opens.

A depressed highway is another option...not sure a boulevard alone will be the answer
