Here is another story on the proposed tunnels from syracuse.com. Perhaps has a little more information.
that powerpoint gives me a headache. so much useless detail on so many of those maps
if this mess costs 6 billion (double whatever they say up front), it would be cheaper to just write a 10,000 check to everyone in onondaga county with a note saying "Sorry 81 is ugly!"since this is all about blending in I think they should have people park at the north/south ends an board a bus through the city. it would be the Dome experience on a larger scale.. it would give people the chance to get off and enjoy the local business/restaurants and we could charge a quarter a ride to get the money back. Sure people would have to budget for a 2nd car but thats a cost pushed out from the taxpayers so it saves the state money on building a large road/tunnel.
It would be better if they just close 81 and bypass the city on 481. Then they should just close down the city too( local traffic only). I will find a different route for my more and more infrequent visits into the city of Syracuse.since this is all about blending in I think they should have people park at the north/south ends an board a bus through the city. it would be the Dome experience on a larger scale.. it would give people the chance to get off and enjoy the local business/restaurants and we could charge a quarter a ride to get the money back. Tunnels are a ridiculous, dangerous and expensive option, just stupid. Rule of thumb, you tunnel if you have no other option.
I guess they think what they can save on snow removal will compensates for all the additional costs. Tunnels must have ventilation fans(huge). Trucks carrying hazardous or flammable materials would have to be banned like trucks are on Onondaga parkway which I am sure will work just as well as it does there after all no trucks have ever hit that railroad bridge.
Who the heck came up with this idea?
Go with the East Alignment option - lots of spending in the local economy - lots of jobs and a great underground route that opens up downtown for commercial and residential development.
Go Big!!!
I agree...then build a nice boulevard between downtown and the university. You could keep I-81 operational until the tunnel opens.Go with the East Alignment option - lots of spending in the local economy - lots of jobs and a great underground route that opens up downtown for commercial and residential development.
