The best place for the region overall is somewhere between the main campus and downtown.  If it ends up there, I think it is really important to reserve a large area for parking.  If it is close to SUNY Upstate, the parking is desperately needed anyway for their employees, as well as other people who work in the general area, mostly people in all the medical support buildings that have sprouted up down the hill north of the hospital.

That open space would be an ideal place for hosting the farmer's market and all the other festivals that are staged downtown.  There really isn't a great place to host festivals downtown right now; this is a big reason why the Jazz Festival left.  If done properly, a sports arena in this area could provide a link between downtown and the medical/university areas and unite them with the Armory Square, Franklin Square, Solar Street, the Syracuse Harbor area/DestinyUSA to make the entire inner city a thriving, exciting place to be.

No reason there couldn't be bars, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs and the like surrounding a sports arena in that area, no reason it couldn't drive a major turnaround of a trouble neighborhood just as the Verizon Center did to Chinatown in DC and the football and baseball stadia in Baltimore did to the Inner Harbor there.

Once we do all of this, we can start planning on hosting our first Final Four.
